Sky HD for an ex-patriate

    Hi All.

I'm living abroad and was wondering what the best way would be for me to get a Sky HD subscription.

My initial plan was to order an installation to my sister's house and have a direct debit to my Irish bank account. The problem is that they already have cable TV installed and I don't want them to go through the inconvenience of having a dish mounted on the side of the house just to get a Sky subscription for me. Plus, they don't have a HD TV and I'm not sure if one is required in order to complete a Sky HD install.

Are there any installers in the Cork City area that would be sympathetic to my situation and could do an install without the inconvenience part to my sister?

Or do I have other options?

    Thanks for any info.

A local independent is your best bet although I'm guessing you will have to pay full price as the retailer may not get any subsidy back from sky.

You can purchase a Sky HD box and order a second hand subscription to get your hands on a viewing card. The equipment is subsidised when you agree to subscribe for a year.

Last time I bothered to read Sky's terms and conditions, I recall reading that you needed to have the equipment connected to a landline for a year if you wanted to avail of their offer of free equipment and standard installation.

Buying your own equipment and ordering a second hand sub gets your out of the contract. You should supply your bank/credit card details and an Irish landline.

The card should be activated in the Sky HD box connected to this landline. However, you'd need to have a dish aligned correctly to do this.

Someone can correct me on this, but I think if you tell Sky customer service that your phone line is engaged [having been instructed to check the line's status on the box], the process can still go ahead.

Also, make sure you get a big enough dish for your location. The Astra 2D footprint is rather tight.

There are plenty websites offering to take care of all this for you [getting the card at least -- you'd still need the digibox]. Just do a search. A lot of them require you to pay for a year in advance.

Do you mean expatriate? An ex-patriate is somebody who is no longer a patriate.
