Data recovery options

My friend's Dell laptop has gone kaput and Dell tell her it's the motherboard and it'll cost about €400 to fix. It's nearly 3 years old so I reckon she'd be better off buying a new machine.

Anyway, am I right in thinking that the data on the HDD will still be intact? If so, what's the best way to recover it and how much is it likely to cost?

Luckily she's backed up her vital stuff but has photos and things she'd like to recover.

Connect it to a desktop using an internal ide cable, buy an external 2.5" caddy and connect it that way, or sent it down to me (based in cork) tell me what you want off it and i'll send them back on DVD.

You can also put the drive in an external usb bay and read it that way.

This did the job for me [it's for an IDE drive; newer drives use SATA but you can tell by looking at it].
