sore throats and chest infections

    since starting training for the marathon, I've had two sore throats and now I have a chest infection. Am up into the mid 30 miles/week at the moment (following the HH intermediate I)

    Have missed this weeks long run on as a result of the infection but hoping to get it in later this week at some stage.

    I am going to try and ride it out without taking an antibiotic and am tempted to go out and do long run and try and shake it off. Good/bad idea? Without being gross, the crap I'm coughing up is not too thick/green and is only really productive at night.

    Is there anything I can take to stay well once this is sorted - i can't remember the last time i was sick before I started doing long miles.

    Its the dose that is currently going around I'm afraid to say, best bet is to sweat it out of you, if you have a chesty cough I recommend Exputex/Codinex to clear the phlem quicker and hopefully that might help you out so you can get back to training!

    I'm after picking something up since the Frank Duffy 10 mile. Same thing happened to me after the half marathon in Connemara. I'm going to fall to bits after the big one in october i think!

    I've also come down with something after the 10mile.... I've got a sore throat and am shivery and headachey.

    I'm trying to run though it, but have reduced the distances slightly.

    From my experiences when you come down with anything chesty its best to take a few days off and not run through it. Its better to arrive at the start of your race fit and healthy and having missed a weeks training than to be still battling with the remnants of a cold, have trained poorly for 2 to 3 weeks but not have missed training.

    Many people who coach themselves will have this problem of not knowing when to stop, a good coach will always get their athlete to rest up in this instance.
