My DVD collection is by no means huge but still with all the various special editions and such it has cost me a fair few grand.

When they are all eventually re-released in superduper HD i'll be tempted to buy some of them again ... i shall also moan that the evil corporations are screwing joe public again and so forth of course !

    So will you ?

Will you "upgrade" your existing collection ? 70 votes

As I understand it, both HD format players are backwards compatible, and will still play DVDs, so I find absolutely no reason not to hold onto the current collection.

I doubt it, buying DVDs has nearly already driven me into bankruptcy. :D

I will buy one eventually but i won't be replacing any of my DvD's unless the price comes waaaay down.

A few select items perhaps but for the rest I don't see any point.

Unless the Xtravision across the road from starts selling them 3 for €20 then I don't think so. Plus my hard drives would be wiped out with the size of those discs, I'm extremely paranoid about backing up my movies as my friends have a tendancy to either lose them or pretty much destroy them! (One friend gave my Casino DVD the worst scratching a DVD could ever get, and the best bit? She never even watched the damn thing when she took it off me  )

That and I guess I'd have to buy a HD TV as well and since I stopped shítting out gold bars back in April, I think my chances are hampered.

I'll only replace the ones I'd really like to have/see in HD format. There's no way I could just throw all my DVDs out and replace them with HD versions though.

No chance. 400+ HD DVDs would cost me a bleedin' fortune.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭Laserface

    hahaha not a hope!

I won't even replace my vhs tapes with dvds...never mind feckin hdtv wifi bollocks.

i still buy tapes around too..
Can't beat them as they don't scratch ;)

I concur with everyone else. Not a hope in hell. The differencein quality just isn't worth the cost.

Upscaling will be fine. It would cost way too much.

:D gold bars are handy when you can produce 'em fast enough!

I'd be tempted to buy all new HD DVDs or whatever when the time comes, but jesus it'd be expensive so I'd just wait till they're cheap like dvds.
By the time that happens though there'll probably be a new fangled technology pushing HD out the door and it'll all happen again.

    that's hilarious.

as for "upgrading" my collection (which is limited anyway)... not a hope. they upscale fine on my ps3 so there's no point in re-buying everything in blu-ray. hell, i don't even watch my DVD's on a regular enough basis to require an update, even if i wanted to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Neo#

Yeah that would be a bit mad. There isnt that much of a difference to justify the cost. The real question is when are we going to start buying hd movies and stop buying dvds. People who have HD probably only have one hd player so its a bit inconvenient to only be able to watch it in one place. And dont forget thr price difference between hd and dvd discs.

Maybe a few of my porn DVD's, lol!!

Nah, don't think I'll be replacing the collection. There are a few movies in it that I may consider replacing! I have noticed that my DVD shopping has declined a good bit, just waiting to see which option of Blu-ray or HDDVD I'll choose before upping my collection. I've been sitting on the fence a while but was going to to with Blu-ray but yesterdays Paramount release has me pirched back on the fence :( They are both doing each other no favours, maybe I should just stick with DVD's!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

300 or so DVDs... No chance.
Anyway I doubt Frankenfish will make the jump to HD :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,034 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

    Absolutely not!

If they release some films on HD only and I really really want them I might, for example the original star wars films but for most upscaling is grand.

This is why I believe nobody will win the blu-ray/HD dvd war - as neither format offer enough to get all excited about and upgrade our collections to. For example if my current DVD collection (300-400 films) was all on vhs and then dvd came out id happily start upgrading them - but both current HD formats aren't worth it for both extra features and picture/sound quality.

I think in the future a decent HD format will emerge eventually which will warrent upgrading all my films but for now no fookin way :)

No, guy a HD 1080p upscaler, it will upscale old DVD's to around 780 HD which is good enough for me, they cost around 80-100 euro and are for sale on my friends site. www.kompustore.ie , its still being set up, just e-mail him and ask about it,

Ive already bough v for vendetta and serenity in HD, i muist actually buy the special edition of serenity when it comes out soon

Never, I've already spent a fortune upgrading from VHS to DVD - I have no interest in HD, the quality on DVD's are already fine if you ask me, this is just another way for the corporations to make money.

probably not. I doubt I'll have a Blu Ray player for a long while anyway. I don;t see the point of going from disk to disk. what do Blu Ray offer than DVD don't apart from better picture?

No chance, much like everyone else here.
The format jump from DVD to VHS was huge, but this difference just isn't that big. I am not going to buy a HD player until this absurd format war is brought to a close anyway - it is really like two children refusing to be come to a sensible solution.

HD is great and all, but Im happy enough with just gaming and the occasional download for the moment.

Ditto. I'd hate to go to the cinema, love a film and then wonder if I'll be able to buy it on X format in 6 months or not.

Upscaling is just fine for my DVD collection.

It's only really new films you'd want to buy in HD anyway. Aren't older titles just upscaled as well...? They'll do a better job than your player at upscaling, but it won't match the quality of a film shot with high definition in mind.

I've only rebought Terminator 1 & 2 on blu ray. Upscaling on my PS3 for the rest of my DVD's. Anything new I get will be on blu ray, except Transformers:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,480 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Well looks like I'm in the minority here then :o 35 HD-DVD's and 28 Blu-Rays so far, I'll upgrade as long as I get better picture quality and HD-Soundtrack,
if no better then the SD then I'm not going there I was early on in the formats buying everything and anything (Like Ultraviolet :( ). Anyway I've attached both my collections for people to view.

I personally think anyone having any type of collection on a disc is mad.

Dvd's have a lifespan of approx 4 years..then one scratch sends em into the bin.

For example I never gave in to the whole music cd thing either.
For the last decade and a half i've focused on vinyl mainly and nowadays I can completely agree with the logic of mp3s....despite the loss of 3/4 of the sound quality. at least they work.

I stuck with Vhs tapes too...and have some that have been kicked around, vomitted on, had organ transplants with other tapes, & even used as frisbees. And guess what???..they still play fine.

I am a bit ignorant at the moment though, in fairness.
Are any of these new Blu-Ray/HDTV things unscratchable??

come wake me up if they are please

Blu Ray's are pretty damn tough:

Outside the realm of Sci-Fi very little is 'unscratchable'.

However Blu-Ray does have a special anti-scratch coating http://www.emedialive.com/articles/readarticle.aspx?articleid=11421#vd and HD-DVD probably has something similar, or can apply the same TDK Durabis process.

I found that my dvds lasted much longer than my VHS tapes, I've never had a DVD rendered unreadable by scratching and most of my most played dvds are more than 4 years old and working perfectly.

Of course I don't kick, vomit or play sports with my media in general.

Actually i poste da link to a upscaler if anyone saw it, it has a usb port on the front so one can connect a usb device like a external HD or usb key. it can play though them which is great, im not using it now so i brought it over to my moms (ive decided to get her into Dexter) and the first 2 episodes of season 1 looked great, can a HD DVD upscaler upscale somethough played though a USB?

Ronin, Yes great film wouldent mind getting that in HD alright

    Not a chance.

I'm much more interested in getting films OFF of discs these days and onto my hard-drive where I can be sure they're not going to degrade or go walkies. The idea of encoding or downloading HD films doesn't appeal to me.. I'm yet to be convinced that it's worth the extra disc space and/or cost.

No. Already have a goood mix of Video and DVD

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 435 ✭✭The Denouncer

Have over 400 DVDs so..Will replace the biggies - Star Wars, LOTR, Indiana Jones, The Matrix, Apocalypse Now..if the Bourne Ultimate boxset comes out I'll probably get that though I have first 2. So about 5% of my collection maybe in total I'll re-buy. Don't forget its not just superior picture we talkign about here but hopefully the DTS or DD master soundtracks, which sounds as good as SACD..now THAT'S tasty! Preferably need a new amp though with at least HDMI 1.2a something like this.
    Though you can use analogs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭doonothing

i still cant really see the benefits of hd-tvs etc.. its not THAT much clearer, and ive never watched a dvd and thought "i wish this picture resolution was slightly better" or anything... nothing about blu ray or hd dvds is appealing to me at all...
i know that probably makes me a philistine, but i can understand wanting to watch certain movies at the best possible quality, but for that price and hassle? nah...

HD pricing is suffering from it's newness and will drop someday. Until it does, forget it! Besides, do I need to see the makeup crack when she (or he) smiles?

Really? Probably the first DVD I've bought was American History X, way back in 1999, I've gotten a lot of viewing out of it, and it still works fine, so I have to surmise that your 'Lifespan' is just talking bollocks. Besides, I find that it takes some serious scratching to really damage a DVD to the point where it's unwatchable. Even then, I can't say I've ever damaged any of mine.

Spot on. Never once lost a DVD to damage and some of mine are well older that 4 years. Like when I upgreaded from VHS I snag cheep bargins fast but no way will i pay full price for a movie i already have on DVD.

Maybe 1 or 2 :) Depends on the movie and the price

I'm just about old enough to remember the separate VHS and Beta shelves in the first video rental places. Another format war now is just ridiculous

Besides, while they are 50-200% more expensive than dvd's I won't be going near them.

No Karl..I'm not talking bollocks...it's obvious that we have both had different experience with dvds.
It IS possible that 2 people can have different viewpoints and both be telling the truth ya know.

Or if you are still confused...

There is a whole other thread in here somewhere with people complaining that every time they rent a dvd it is scratched to ****. I seem to be in the same boat as them.
And no Karl...they are not talking bollocks either.

Pm me if you need more advice

Laseface theres a big difference between a DVD that you rent and one that you take out occassionally to watch Like Karl does with American History X, if you look after your DVD's and make sure they go straight back into the storage box after watching them then you should get at least 10-15 years out of it, more likely to fail will be the laser on your DVD player rather then the disc, there have been cases where some Dvd's have become unplayable due to an issue called DVD rot, but this is rare, as for Blu-Ray & HD-DVD, I will always check the Discs to make sure that there are no scratches on them and will reject the BR or HD-DVD if there are even light scratches on them, you have to remember these disc have 4+ times the data stored on them. Gamestop I find the worst as 9 times out of 10 they are stored in crappy plastic slips and discs are always scratched.

depends really. I have to admit that after watching HD compared to normal DVD its hard to go back. The picture looks smudged, grainy, out of focus and washed out.

As TV's get larger and their prices get smaller as well as HD-DVD/Bluray prices getting smaller, I forsee a lot of people moving their DVD collection over to HD.

Myself, its a hit and miss, for dramas, comedies...etc I wouldn't bother. But for action movies and movies with large panoramas and set pieces i'll move them over to HD.

I just finished watching the "Planet Earth" series in 1080p and I watched it over at a friends house on his 26" TV on DVD and it was frankly horrible.

If anything, this switch over will help you categorise your movie collection more, as it will be only the ones you truly love that you will move over to HD. At least until it becomes affordable to move them all over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,480 ✭✭✭✭Snake Plisken

Thats it L31mr0d, I will be looking to pick up classics rather then blind buys, ones I'll pick up this year will include Blade Runner, The Shining, Carlito's Way and Twilight Zone The Movie (the John Litghow on a plane story scared the shi-te out of me when I was a kid :) ) Might also buy 28 Weeks later and Sunshine when they come out.

You're talking about a specific lifespan of a DVD. Now this is either something factual, that you can back up with a citation, or it is not. "Viewpoint" doesn't come into it, we're not talking about something like a movie that one person liked and one person hated. It's not a perspective thing.

Either this lifespan is something that can be factually verified, or it's not, and you just pulled this little factoid out of your imagination. Simple as.

As was pointed out, there is an absolute world of difference between owning a DVD yourself that you treat with respect, and renting out a DVD that has been molested by a dozen or so gurriers who might try and damage it on purpose in order to get another free rental, or just for the laugh because they're scumbags.

I'm hoping that some day one of the major distributors or shops will offer an incentive to upgrade from DVD to HD or Blu Ray. It would be quiet easy for them to take your existing copy of a film on DVD in trade against a newer one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Actually I'm quite behind when it comes to video shops nowadays since I rarely rent anymore, is the format war going on in them as well?
