How does one block websitea on Firefox?

I can do it easily enough on Internet Explorer through simply adding the urls to a box in the tools menu somewhere so that it asks for a password to access the sites.

How can I do this for Firefox?

while you are at it have a look at these other more specific blocking stuff

    adblock plus Blocks many ads
    noscripts blocks scripts

You can use this one to remove items/clutter on your favorite pages
    Remove It Permanently

If you install adblock plus make sure to get alblock filterset add-on - it automatically updates blocked sites daily from the Firefox community.
