What about the Institute? I know you think grinds schools are crap but in fairness, this place has some unbelievable teachers.

You get what you put in. I went to the Institute and did the whole course in 1 year and managed 470 points. Other people took 2 years and got a lot less. Sorry to say but you have to put in work. There's no other way to get good grades.

Well if you're near Lucan then Colaiste Phadraig Cbs would be the most convenient.

Very true. If everywhere is 'crap' do it yourself.

Grinds schools are Businesses primarily focused more towards the commercial aspect of fobbing people off, while maximizing potential rewards for the shareholder's.

Just don't forget that a business is a business at the end of the day, and no matter how many A1 grade's the IOE produces, the Institute of Education(ironic ain't it:D) can never really be on the same par with a proper public school even in exam circumstances.
    Damn I hate that place.

There is no such thing as a 'good school'.
There are students who for a number of reasons (parents have paid fees, parents have high ambitions, culture of work, personality) try hard and want to succeed and then there are students who are lazy and have no ambition. Then there are people who are a mix of both. The even spread of results among all different types of schools shows this.

A hard working student will do well and a lazy person won't.

The difference is not the school, it's you. It's generally a better idea to repeat in a school that is not your original school.

    Hi all,

Hope someone can help me - got a relative in trouble with leaving cert. I repeated my one about 18 years ago in Dun Laoghaire Tech- anyone know is that still going?

Someone said the O'Connell school was good - can anyone let me know where that is?

Also, when you're repeating the leaving - like in Institute of Education, I know they ask to see your previous results - does it matter if these are really weak?

    thanks all

Dun Laoghaire Tech. is now a Further Education College.

O'Connell School is on North Richmond Street, off the North Circular Road, close to the junction with Summerhill, in the shadow of Croke Park. It is an easy enough walk from Connolly Station. It has a high proportion of students from other countries, which tends to up the standards.

Among the traditional Dublin schools with a good track record of 'repeat' years are Marian College, Ballsbridge, and, on the northside St Joseph's CBS, Marino, and O'Connell Schools.

I think that is might be wise pointing out that, if you do decide to repeat, don't just completely assume that it's going to be no bother getting those extra points because your doing it for the second time. A girl I know repeated this year, and actually ended up with less points this time around.

id recommend the institute. went there for 6 months coz started late and went up 85 points to 555,didnt get med again but hav d grades for most colleges in england now. did 6 subjects. in fairness its d notes and d structure of the day that makes it good coz u hav to go to study classes during the day nd u cant doss in them so d only thing left to do is study! i dropped irish nd took up ag science for the 6 months nd got an A1 in it so if uv done biology and geography already then definitely do dat!
saying dat tho, dont go there expecting to do well without putting in any work. i didnt study after school wen i went home except for the last month but got alot done in the study classes.be realistic bout the grades ur predicting and work most on d subjects that you find the hardest.
    :)

no it doesnt matter, they just want to see what your weakest subjects are so that they can offer u alternative subjects which u mite find easier and get a better grade in. i got a C1 in irish and they recommended i drop it and take up ag science because they thought i had a better chance of getting getting a high grade in that instead of struggling to get from a C1 to an A1 in irish. managed to get the A1 in ag science so im glad dey recommended it!

Not hugely, it'll be used as a guide to decide what subjects you're good or bad at + help you pick what subjects to take up or whatever.

I repeated in St Laurence College in Loughlinstown + can't reccomend it enough. They make you work there, + I went from 440 to 550. There's a range of students there, ranging from people who didn't pass first time out to those trying for medicine + on average people go up by about a hundred points, though thats just on average.

Went to the Institute .You really do have to put the work in though!
There are good and bad teachers in every school, and yeah private schools are a business, alot of money too! The teachers in ioe don't waste time, they give u the notes ,the rest is up to u.If your bothered or not. IMO If I had to repeat i'd go back to IOE.

    Good luck

Why do people taunt each other about spelling? As long as its close enough and you understand them its grand.
