TV Picture Gone Weird

My telly has decided to go mental and as well as now and again giving out a high pitched whine, the picture is distorted when first turned on and takes ages to correct itself. Once it's finished doing that I am left with a wobbly black bar down the right hand side that moves constantly making viewing very difficult as there is now a permanent distraction on the screen. Also, the TV turns itself off whenever it likes and can be tiresome when trying to get it to come on again. I have included some pictures I just took. Does anyone know what the fault could be and if it would be a major (i.e. expensive) fault to fix, or whether I should just dump it and get a new TV. Thanks.

Bein honest, it could be a number of things. Best thing to do is ring your local tv repair guy (they do exist!!), and ask him what it might cost... cos im not sure what they are chargin for labour these days..
More than likely ya will have to bring it in to find out...
If it was me... id fix it...
mind u when my last crt died, i knew exactly what was wrong... and even had the part to fix it... but sure that would mean i couldnt have got a nice big flat screen.. :D

I was thinking about just dumping it and getting a flat screen, but then with the state of flat screens today, there would be better ones and cheaper ones around if I waited a year or so down the line and the CRT would serve me well. It's only 4 years old so I wouldn't like to think I had to replace the whole thing this early!

Put a figure on it youself. What is it worth to you to have it fixed?
Bring it to your local guy, if he says less than your figure.. go for it.. more bin it.

One thing.. It didnt get a bang of somthing? say a child playin power rangers or somthing?

Not to my knowledge, but I'm not there during the day as I'm at work. About 3/4 months ago my little brother had a magnet and found it hilarious when he rubbed the magnet all over the screen of the TV (and the portable in the kitchen), making the colours all go mad. But it has corrected itself since that and the portable (a cheapo Goodmans from Argos) works perfectly, so surely the big named Philips shouldn't have suffered?

No, it doesnt look to be that sort of problem. If it was, all you do to fix it, is plug out the tv, leave it off for 20 mins, and turn it on again.
But as I say, doubt thats the problem because the colours would look seperated, and they dont.

Well, the local repair shop have rang and told me that the tube has gone and that it will cost £200+ to fix and that it might be better off buying a new one altogether. Could the tube really have gone after just 4 years? (It is a Philips though).

Also, the TV has come back now and is perfect, not a problem. Tube broke my arse!

    Tubes dont go.
If there was a problem when it was manufactured, it would show up pretty quickly.... like in the first week.
They may get damaged, but they dont just "go"
In my experience this is what people are told when the guy fixing it 1.doesnt know what hes doing 2. cant find the fault. 3. might be able to find the fault but knows he will spend ages doing it. 4 cant be arsed....
id say there was a dry joint or loose connection and the moving of the tv fixed it... at least temporarily.
