The damn format war will continue! And worst of all 'Transformers' won't come out on Blu Ray! Or 'Indiana Jones' probably. It doesn't include movies directed by Steven Spielberg, they will be released on Blu Ray still.

    Press Release

Meh.. Blu-Ray, Schmu-Ray! (witty, eh?! yes... i did go there!).

I still can't fathom the support behind this Blu-Ray or HD-DVD stuff.. i actually carried out a college presentation on Blu-Ray and from personal opinion, i am impressed with it but not enough to make me wanna run out and buy a player.

HD-DVD is losing the war but Blu-Ray players (apart from PS3) would want to drop price a lot (can't see much saturation of the market anytime soon) before i'd buy a player.

Well I don't have a blu-ray player yet but the videophile in me wants one. I'll be getting a blu ray drive when I build a htpc (hopefully soon :D)

Why can't they release on both formats like warner?. I was looking forward to watching Transformers in HD on my PS3:mad:
With blu ray seemingly winning the format war, how does this decision make sense?:(
EDIT: HD DVD reportedly paid 150 million dollars for this deal:

The percentage of HD sales versus DVD sales is still tiny - squabbling like this, over who gets to play what, is going to do nothing to help either. I'm more than happy to sit on the sidelines and let it play out and I'm betting many others are as well.

Yeah most people are willing to wait but remember that lots of people have Blu Ray capabilities with their PS3's and tbh before this announcement it really seemed like HD DVD would crumble (It will but not as quickly) It only had one studio exclusively supporting it. So Blu Ray was pretty much already the winner. Transformers might eventually be released on Blu Ray.......once it wins mu ha ha ha

EDIT: Just checked bluray.com and Fox has announced 29 new titles on Blu Ray. '28 Days Later' out OCtober 9th! I love that movie

Anyone else dissapointed by HD? I've got HD TV shows and films online and watched a few Blu-ray's and there all a nice improvement but IMO they're not even worth the extra download, no way I'd spend huge money on a player.

Not trying to derail this topic but seeing as how the PS3 is the cheepest of the new blue-ray players how does it hold up quality wise against other blue-ray players which cost 300 quid more?

You can buy a blu-ray player for about the same price as a PS3 and considerably cheaper if you are willing to go second hand.

Don't own a PS3 myself but I know that some standalone player are capable of playing a Blu Ray at the original 24fps it was recorded at instead of 29fps (is it?) that the PS3 and other BD players do.

The PS3 is as good as the top Blu Ray players on the market and better than the lower end models. In terms as a pure Blu Ray player the PS3 is slightly ahead of the game it has more than enough power to encode and process Blu Ray picture quality at and above current top industry standard.

That and the console is constantly improving this with any firmware updates that may be needed.
