Hi Sumac, I ran it a few times, although giving it a miss this year. It's a very flat course, and probably fastest marathon on the island (I haven't run Cork, so can't vouch for it). There's a slight uphill drag at 3 or 4 miles, then again just after Roosky, at halfway. After 20miles, it's actually slightly downhill all way to the finish. There can be long stretches when you are on your own, and note that the Full course starts with the Half course, so one needs to mindful of pace in the first few miles, as the Half-mar field goes tearing off. It's well organised, and a nice pasta party arranged for the night before. Best of luck with it, if you're taking part.

Cork is pretty flat considering it's in Cork but at a guess less flat than Dublin. I haven't run Longford so can't compare.

I'm not a fast runner but I did my fastest one there, its a nice marathon small compared to others but great support. Best of luck with it and try to enjoy it. You only get one first marathon.

Thanks for that - a little nervous - afraid of getting injured, hitting the wall etc.

I would'nt worry too much about that if its your first marathon, its the third and fourth ones walls that are diffiucult:) Notwithstanding that, let people know how your get on and once again enjoy it and best of luck.

Well - I managed to finish my first marathon - It was even tougher than I imagined. Finished it in just under 3:25 - very happy with the time. Legs very stiff but getting better.

Will probably do at least 1 more. Around mile 18 on Sunday I would have said never again but now I would like to improve on my time.

I think this is why my legs really suffered from around mile 18. Also my longest run had only been 2.5 hrs. I think this needs to be increased to at least 3hrs.
Anyway I am going to do some cross training and weights (with a few runs thrown in) for a month or two.
Any chance if u guys could check www.longfordmarathon.com for the results. I have been told they were uploaded on Sunday night but I can't see them

Thanks Sumac - you're after giving me inspiration that I can do the Dublin marathon after all. Did my longest run to date y'day of just over 17 miles and my first thought was "how the hell am I going to do 9 more on the day ?" esp. as my calf muscles ached like hell when I stopped, but as I'm averaging 30-35 miles per week, I'm hoping that another 6 weeks at that rate will leave me ready for Oct. (plus I'm only aiming for a 4:30'ish time being an oul fella 0f 44 doing his first marathon !)

Well done on your excellent time for a first marathon !

Sumac that was really good going. Based on your training you over performed (don't mean that in a bad way:) ) You definitely have lots of potential.

I wouldn't worry about increasing your longest run to 3hrs, maybe an additional long run during the week of 1.75 hours would be more beneficial. Thats just my opinion anyway.

    Well done again

    Cheers roadrunner.

Will be interesting to see whether increased mileage could lead to a better time next time out!
