    Hey,

Anyone know where I could get a nice basic cheap handheld radio? Smaller the better. Took a look around electronics shops in town to no avail.

    Cheers,
    Quad

Are you talking about the type you'd plug a set of headphones in and carry about, or a portable radio with a speaker?

Have bought both recently. Power City or Peats had the best selection - which isn't saying much. Radio "Walkman" style with headphones are almost defunct, it seems, with the plethora of MP3 players with radios on the market.

I bought a handheld Sony radio with a speaker about two weeks ago and the volume control broke within a couple of days. The Roberts ones look like good quality but are pricey. I think you take your chances at this end of the market though.

    Hope this helps. :)

    That'd be the job!

I have used one of these for the past two year, and it is fantastic.

I went to buy my Dad one this weekend and they only have a newer model of this in the Sony Centre for €90 - which looks awful and feels cheap. The only other portables were analogue radio (i.e. no presets). There was a Sony one for about €44 in most places which looked fine, but as I said the choice was limited.

If you can afford the extra cash and the wait - I'd buy the same one I have online. Otherwise there's not much to find. It may be worth looking at flash MP3 players with a radio - as some of the non-brands are dirt cheap now.

    G'luck!

ps Get some in-ear style headphones to go with it - they don't fall out the whole time!

Another option worth considering would be to use a phone with a FM radio built in.

Argos has a pretty good selection, got a small sony with a headphone jack and a speaker a week or two ago for €15.

Have one of these myself. You should be able to pick on up for 35.Very reliable.

Although, if you want to go for something very cheap try one of those 2 Euro shops. Should be something in them. Can't vouch for their quality though!!

I bought one of these in Dixons/Currys in Blanch about a year. I find it great and the presets are exacly what you need for surfing different preset channels. The wheelie tuner on the cheaper radios is of no use when you are in any on the move or even just flicking from channel to channel to find something you want to listen to.

There is also a clip on the back so you can clip it onto your belt or whatever

While it has 3 wave bands it is not powerful enough to pick up Radio 5 on MW on a Saturday to listen to a UK match
