Hello, I just accepted my offer for DT211 and I simply want to know when I should approximately receive some sort of response by DIT.
At the expense of possibly looking like an idiot:

Do I have to take any extra steps to register or let the CAO/DIT deal with this stuff:confused:
I mean, they have all my details surely.
    All response's appreciated.

Hi Naikon, you should get a mailing from the college next week sometime and that will give you details about your induction / registration and when your classes start. Then the first week in September you'll get a mailing from Campus Life with all the information about student life in DIT - Clubs Societies and DITSU.

The registration timetable for DT211 is on the website here

    http://www.dit.ie/DIT/students/induction/registrations/Sci-Art-1st-Yr-Induction-KST-200708.doc

If you're living outside Dublin you should probably start looking for accommodation immediately!

Thank you for the induction timetable and info:)

    Oh you went for DT211.

Thought it was DT228 you wanted to go for?

Yeah, I thought a bit about it and just put DT211 down at the last moment:o
I like the fact they teach the cisco CCNA course in 211.
Only thing that kinda sucks is that they don't teach C/C++ programming till second year, JAVA in third year I think.

I know the basics of C(not so great on pointers...Yet:p) , and learning Pascal in first year seems like a nuisance considering the syntax is different and it's reputation as just an "Educational language":D
    Beats learning Qbasic though.

I suppose I can always switch courses though depending on results if need be.

I've got a similar problem. I've got an offer of DT001 (Product design, Faculty of applied technology) on 23rd of August, and I still haven't received any notice about registration from DIT. Is there something wrong, or is DIT taking its time? ;)

The weird thing is, I've already received a letter about campus life, way back in May. :X

Round 1 only closed on Tuesday evening so the colleges will only start processing the acceptances yesterday/today. I'd expect it to be a least a few more days before you hear anything.

I'm glad I found this thread, I was getting pretty worried that I hadn't been sent anything! Anyone doing DT106? And anyone on Facebook? :)

You're in DT228 Orla? I started that course in 2000 but left in 2004. I'm now going back into year 4 to finish it off!

    Kevin.

Yeh i should be going into fourth year this year aswell but I thought second year would be a piece of piss like first was and ended up having to repeat half of it.

Oh okay; that's a shame. The first year is indeed a joke (as in, easy) but second year is definately the hardest of the entire course. I know this because I've actually done fourth year before too, but completely messed it up; and left. After three years' absence, I'm on my way back though!

    Take care,
    Kevin

I've got my first year registration notice yesterday, from faculty of applied technology.

Just in case anyone of ye is going to do courses from that faculty, the registratin date for first years is September 12th.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 77 ✭✭drogbaa

    Hi ExperiMental,

We'll be glad to have you in DIT. Just to clarify, I think you may have meant the Faculty of Applied Arts? Each course will have a different registration date, so people will be registering from September 10th on. If you didn't receive a registration date yet, you can check the dates on the registration site: www.dit.ie/registrations Just click on the relevant campus on the menu on the left hand side.

    What course are you doing?

I'm going to do product design DT001

I'm sorted when it comes to induction dates and campus locations, etc - I got them all in a leter along with registration notice.

I'm also heading into 4th yr of DT228 after screwing up last year. Looking forward to it only I heard it's modularised this year (it wasn't last year). Kevster are you going into SDIS stream?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

    Heya,

No I'll be doing the CSAA route. That's the one I did the last time I was in the course, back in 2004. I want to stay as far away from databases as I can. I despise databases!

What options have you in mind? For me it's definately Bioinformatics.

Here's a good outline of it all: http://www.comp.dit.ie/dt228/yr4.html

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 89 ✭✭Dr Lektroluv

Oh I was just looking at that link you posted, it's completey different from last year! Last year we had to do DS, AID and DB all year (This is SDIS I'm talking about) and 2 of the options all year aswell. Was that the same when you were in the final yr in 2004?

I'm probably gonna choose this option anyway (was called MIS last yr)
    # Business Perspectives on Technology & Strategic Management

    and maybe
    # Accessible Design & Usable Design
In addition students can select two options modules, one in the first semester and a follow on module in the second semester.
Actually from reading that link, we are only allowed select 1 option module and then the continuation module from that for the 2nd semester? So at any 1 time we are only doing 4 subjects as opposed to 5 last year? Am I interpreting that correctly?

Some of the options are gone and there are some new 1's there too. Anyway might see ya round campus ;-)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭Kevster

No, it'd be 6 subjects at any one time, right? You have the 5 core subjects and then 1 option. In the second semester you pick a different option then. Like, I'm going to be picking Bioinformatics I & II for the first and second semesters.

When I was in 4th year in 2004, we had very few options and there was only two streams available (SDIS & CSAA). That's because we were only the second group to go through that course. I started it in 2000, but the course was only created in 1999. So, everything was new.

I'm looking forward to going back... ...should be good! I've spent the last two years getting a Biology Cert in Carlow!

Well it says on the site:

"Within each stream the student takes a number of core modules, three in the first semester and three in the second semester."

So that's where I was getting 4 (at any 1 time) from. 3 core + 1 option module for Semester 1. and then 3 core + continuation option module for Semester 2. It is a bit confusing because it's a system I'm not used to but I'm sure they'll explain it once we start.

Oh yeh... ...that's puzzling alright. I guess we won't find out until the day we start.

Don't forget the Final Year Project!!! That is ongoing for the entire year and is supposed to basically count as a subject (one hour project class & one hour session with supervisor plus lots of lab time!) so technically you'll be doing 5 modules a semester.

Have to admit I'm not sure about the semesterised final year, I can see the beenfits (i.e. less to learn for finals) but there are also the major drawbacks (i.e. no completely free Christmas period for emergency project catchups!). Glad I finished up last year before it all changed, roll on October and the gowns and parties!

I think the FYP is worth two subjects, no? In any case, I have learned from my mistakes and have already thought extensively about a potential FYP. I just need to discuss it with a lecturer when everything starts in two weeks!

    Kevin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 237 ✭✭Dunners

As I remember the FYP counts as one subject ECTS wise - but don't quote me on this. All I will say is do a little bit EVERY single day and you'll be grand don't do what I did and live without sleep for a month to try and rush it all through :(
