A mate of mines kid broke his, and rather then buy a new one, he had a look on eBay for a case and i think the screen as it got damaged too and he was out of it for €60 and a small bit of work.. the cases are on eBay for about 25 euro but you'll need to get a small philips and a small tri wing screwdriver to get it done.

just another option if ya get no good of it.

right I had another thread going on this my daughters DS Lite right hand hinge broke about 6 weeks after getting it, went into Smyths they would send it off for me but didn't trust them so rang Nintendo UK (bit of a pain as its a uk number) and after 20mins got through to a guy who gave me an RMA number and told me just send the DS, so packed it into 2 jiffy bags and send it registered post to (make sure u value it at 150 euros) yesterday, two weeks after sending it got a new ds-lite back in the door. I doubt they will check it as they will just look at the damaged hinge and send you out a new one

P.S. You need to send a copy of your receipt

P.P.S. To OP don't say anything about dropping it it's a design fault that the hinges keep breaking on the Lite's.

It was only a certain run of them that were faulty.

Well the guy I talked to in Nintendo said it was a design fault that put additional pressure on the hinge when you opened it out to 180Deg.
Plenty of threads on the net about it one in particular in the UK here http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=274&order=desc&page=2 started in July last year and still going strong with people finding the fault. If it was only a certain run of them then why are people still finding faults almost brand new DS's. I have 2 others a black and a whitel as well as the replacement Pink Lite sent from Nintendo, I will be keeping a close eye on the hinges.

Just got an email from them and they quoted me £45.25 to replace my busted one .

Did you get one repaired for that rate recently from Ireland?

is it broken hinge issue or something else? Is it still under warrenty? If its the hinge and its still under warrenty they should replace it for free

The rate I posted was what some Brit-mates were charged a while back, so I assumed it'd be the same for us now. It's really bloody cheeky if they've almost doubled it since.

It did have a cracked hinge but the final straw was a drop to concrete floor and broken into a number of bits.

I was going to replace it and was just looking to see what my options where to complicate things further it was bought in the US over a year ago i dont know if this is the reason the quote i got was higher than The Almighty Arse's

I have a feeling that the extra 20 sterling is because i am i Ireland the email definately has a £ sign but i am going to email them to see if they meant € because i have to send a cheque for the amount along with old DS by reg post .

With the cost and hassel i might just wait as i am going to the US later in the year i can borrow the kids DS in the mean time

I just noticed that dealextreme.com now stock a lot of repair/replacement parts for the DS Lite.

Full casing $26.90 should sort out your hinge problems. Also have top and bottom screens for $10 to $15. All have free shipping, although it does take a few weeks. The tri-wing screwdriver to open it is just pence on the same site.

Hmm, that's got me thinking. About €7 for a replacement touch screen versus a couple of euro a time for screen protectors that don't quite fit properly and annoy me each time the stylus runs off the edge and clicks back "up the kerb". I might just try one.

Well, could be that they've been sitting in the store room in Smyth's for a year or something, or it could be that some people are more forceful than others. The design fault was rectified but it's still susceptible to wear and tear, and if Nintendo think the damage was caused by wear and tear rather than their design, they'd be mad to change it for free. They're very good for servicing things, but damage obviously caused by misuse they should charge for. Bear in mind that a simple hinge might be an easy fix, but there's no telling if something else is damaged inside too, such as the link cable or a PCB, both of which could easily cost the extra £20...

Well tbe Customer Service rep told me that due to this broken hing issue Nintendo are being pretty leeniant on broken hinge issues at the moment, to me that means they see a broken hinge they send out a new one as a replacement. Now if its a broken hing and screen or other issue then you might have problems.
