Teaching Beginners - Lesson 1

I am going to teach my sis and a couple of her mates how to play poker, first lesson tomorrow. Hopefully a new breed of weak-tight nits who massively over-value overpairs will soon be unleashed on the Dublin poker scene. Starting out with Pot Limit Holdem. My plan for the session is as follows -

    1. The Rules. Hole cards, flop, turn etc, small and big blinds, betting order.

    2. Starting Hands. Ranges and relative strengths.

    3. Position. This is pretty much the single most important feature of play right?

    4. Folding. I think the biggest mistake most beginners make is not letting go of their gutshot draws and low to middle pairs.

Am I missing any fundamentals?? What do you reckon should be the single most important concept they take away??

Erm....not sure I should answer this...but late twenties. I think their primary motivation is to take their respective boyfriends to the cleaners unexpectedly.

When you're demonstrating how unlikely it is for 27o to crack aces fix the deck everytime! I was unfortunate enough to deal two pair the first time I was proving to my girlfriend why you shouldn't ever play 27o!

Mike Caro and the poker parrot thought me weak means strong and strong means weak.

    BAWK!

Ah you see in Poker this is something you must master! You must always sit in a seat that's closest to the toilets! The nearer you are to the toilets, the more hands you play as you will spend less time going to and from the toilets! Get me?

Whatever the hell you teach them, the most important thing should be how to handle chips and not to slow the game down by asking repeatedly "how much is it" or "how much is this chip worth again" or "is it up to me" or "oh sorry was it not my turn". Nothing creams beginner like it. On the other hand if they show a natural ability or some such, then the above can be a very effective way to get paid off.

If you see patterns in their play, like always checking the nuts etc then tell them to always act the same, bluffing or not.

Big pots with big hands. Smaller pots with smaller hands.

play premium cards,no point bluffing at this level as most games I play in (donkey derbys) people will call call call all night long, even all in with a pair of 4's with 3 overcards on the board (this actually happened friday night) and the guy wasn't semi bluffing he thought he was winning!!

arrange a place and time to do the lesson...
Then don't turn up - teaches them the most important lesson of all!! LOL

Also, teach them poker etiquette and that slowrollers should be tortured. Poor Frank Hunt got slowrolled the other night in holdem. Frank flopped a straight and got it all in on the flop. The board paired on the river to fill up a guy who waited about 10 seconds after Frank showed and them flipped his cards over. He then shook hands with his mate a couple of hands away, receiving congratulations. slowrolling is bad, mkay?

make sure they put their opponents to a decision for all their chips

make sure to tell them that if they're feeling lucky or are "on a roll" to jam it all in with any 2 cards. valuable lesson.

Emmm, why has no-one said more about this one huge piece of information. You have the undivided attention of a group of late 20's girls/women, and you want to be nattering on about slowrolling, ranges and position?? No!! No!! No!!

You want to get out a few bottles of wine to "make the game more enjoyable" and towards the end of the night obviously a game of strip poker and "truth or dare" will ensue, culminating in some kind of underwear pillow fight/ Benny Hill hilarity/ [insert other more "racy" possibility here]. Yes my mind did run away with me there, but come on people!!

This is a golden opportunity, don't let it pass. Poker should be fun, keep it light, bang on about the rules, following the action, then mention the one thing all beginners should know: If a hand is worth playing, it's worth raising, therefore if it's not worth raising, just fold that Mofo!! If they enjoy the game then they can learn more of the finer points.

I was going to mention this but a couple of key words stopped me. In no particular order those words are:

    Sister
    Boyfriends

Yes, the former was a slight stumbling block for me, but I decided that you just get her blotto and send her off to bed, the latter will just mean the girls wake up with pangs of guilt, but meh, I'm OK with that... :D LOL

    1. Fake riffling
    2. Bottom dealing
    3. Palming
    4. Marking cards
    5. Clever use of mirroring rings
    5. Shorting like they're Puggy Pearson
    6. The tourny strategy of Men the Master
    7. If they are upper middle class - the power of a huge stack
    8. if they are working class - the power of balaclavas and a shotgun

    I expect two problems -

1 They will play two suited cards every time, and call, and call with them.
2 They will show each other their cards, and ask each other what should they do.
