SkyDSL

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum  - I've recently set-up SkyDSL but anytime I use the software that came with it, I usually see the signal appear for 3 or 4 seconds and then go straight back to 0. The signal quality is 100 and the signal level is 75ish on average I usually have to plug the USB box in and out or restart the application several times before it locks on and stays locked on for few hours. So I was just wondering if anyone here would know if this pointed towards a fault in the hardware - particularly if this could have anything to do with the allignment of the satellite which I've set up on Altlantic Bird 2. Any ideas:confused:

"Teles skyDSL" - Very interesting. If you are in Ireland you are the first I have heard using SkyDSL. I was only aware of 2 major operators providing this service here, Digiweb and Eircom/cant remember the company they use but they got pretty bad press recently). I assume it has no connection to BskyB who, even in the UK provide a landline only broadband service. I see from their website it is relatively cheap, as it is unidirectional, you provide your own "uplink" via phone modem or ISDN.
I am not particularly au fait with sat DSL but I can share my ignorance;)

You dont mention whether you actually had success using it, it sounds like you have eventually. It could be you are getting conflicts between the phone modem and the sat modem or various hardware driver problems. As you are effectively using 2 providers, I wonder is there a lag between the send and receive and it takes a while to establish a downlink connection.
Have you ruled out obvious problems such as trees etc blocking your signal, loose/bad connections? Is your dish large enough? In poor weather conditions (we call it SUMMER:mad: ) your signal level may be all over the place on an inadequate dish. I doubt the signal is very strong here so dish size and accurate allignment will be critical. It cant be easy to allign a dish without a TV picture to confirm everything is OK. :(

I suspect that if you can establish you are receiving a stable signal from the correct satellite 8W then that is unlikely to change and your issues may be due to hardware conflicts or unstable software applications. Perhaps time to put in a support call or email.

    WARNING: AVOID SkyDSL!
I've been using SkyDSL satellite broadband for a year. Before I signed up they promised me that I would be able to connect all 3 of my families networked PCs to the internet. I was able to do this with my previous service provider, Mediasat, for nearly 2 years.
When they installed the equipment I found out this was a lie. I would have to buy a SkyDSL box, similar to the sat modem I had with Mediasat, for a further €200. This worked for a few months and we were all happy. Then the box would not function and I had a terrible time getting them to replace the box. When the replacement arrived, I found that this was faulty straight out of the box. It took nearly two months of arguing with their technical support before they would agree to take it back and refund me the €200.
At this point, in June, I decided to cancel my subscription as my 6mth contract had expired. I was told that as my contract had not been terminated before its expiration, it was automatically renewed for another 6 mths and I would have to pay them for the rest of the contract term. I was not happy with this but I should have read the terms and conditions. Now I've sent a reminder of my original request to terminate the contract and they want to add another six months to my contract as the reminder was sent less than a month before the expiration of the contract. I told them that the original request was sent 3 months before expiration but to no avail.
These little German Hitlers will not get another cent out of me.

So Beware! You've been warned! Avoid SkyDSL!:eek:

I would like to warn everybody before signing in for skydsl.
    See here www.kilcoole.eu
Long story short - they offer unlimited, flat rate broadband, but you are subject to fair use policy. Their fair use policy is not clearly defined and after 14 days of using the service they cut me off. The worst thing was that they couldn't tell when I will get the full access back.
I told them I'm not going to pay until I get a full speed conection as advertised on their website.
I already contacted NCA (national consumer agency), but looks like they don't really give a sh**.

So far I have received a second demand for payment this morning, but this time they said they are forced to cancel my contract and employ collection agency.
I hope Irish law will protect me and I will have my right to defence when they come.
    I'm telling you - AVOID!
