    It's a tenner every 5 months.

Are you sure about that? This page on the Vodafone web site says it's €52 free call credit. €2 with your SIM and the rest over 5 months. That would be €10 per month over 5 months: http://www.vodafone.ie/readytogo/whyrtg/freecredit/index.jsp

Do you have to top-up by a certain amount every month?

Free SIM, with €50 credit over five months is definitely a Bargain Alert even if it is vodafone, good find OP :)

I'm not sure where you got that information from Foggy Lad. The Vodafone web site says:

    SIM Only
    Customer Type - Free Credit

New Customer - new number €15 - €5 with your SIM, rest over 2 months

Switching network - keep your number €52 - €2 with your SIM, rest over 5 months

You've a couple of options, assuming you're on Meteor PAYG:

    1) Get the unlocking code from Meteor. If you've spent enough on top ups with Meteor they'll give you the unlocking code. (I think it's usually over €100)

    2) If that doesn't apply to you, then ask about unlocking your phone on the Mobile forum's unlocking thread here on Boards.ie The very helpful people there will know if your phone can be unlocked, and how.
