Ouch. Sorry to see that. It's nuts Gibson still won't do anything to strengthen that part of the Les Paul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

The worst thing was I was in the middle of a song :(

Well, after you count the whole "headstock" thing I mean.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    The second worst thing then.

You gonna try to get it fixed or just go for something different?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 249 ✭✭Hypnotoad

    :(

    Is it fixable?

Em, can't afford anything. I'm about to go off on holidays. I'll see about getting it fixed when I get back.

It might be fixable, but there isn't much wood on the guitar. Might have to cut some grooves.

dear god.... I would cry! Thats horrible to see man!

Were you not holding the neck tho?

Jaysus Paul.. that is rough.. ring the guitarworkshop.. he will make it better.
    Feel very sorry for you.

    Ouch.

It's fixable anyway. A good luthier can be a miracle worker when it comes to the standard Gibson headstock fall-off.

It's about 30-40c in my rehearsal room, the sweat just made it slide. It's probably >9 lbs as well.

Jesus. I instantly exclaimed out loud "Ooooooh!" when I saw the pics.

    ****ing sucky thing to happen.

For what it's worth, I use DiMarzio Cliplock straps for most of my guitars, and I find them as absolutely solid as they come. You basically screw the ends right into the guitar, so nothing's going anywhere. If you look at the likes of Satriani, Vai, Petrucci and many other serious touring guitarists use the Cliplock straps live, so you can pretty much be assured of their quality. Definetly something to look into in future, for a bit more safety and piece of mind.

But yeah, seriously sucky thing to happen. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

yeah good quality straplocks are a must. learned that the hard way too, although the only damage i did was cosmetic thank god. sucks though, my prayers are with you (well they would be if i were religious)

Giblet here: basically, dunlop use ball bearings to hold a lock, and one of them fell out of its holding due to wear. So it had a less than solid grip. I'm not as pissed off as you'd imagine. I just want my guitar back.

Giblet? What are you doing on funktastic's account?

I really hope it's repairable though, I've thankfully never had a guitar break on me, but I imagine I'd be very upset if it did happen.

giblet: yeah I'm just drinking in his house. I hope it's repairable alright :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Ah, drinking. Best way to get over anything. ;)

I'm still feeling a bit iffy from the copious amounts of Jack Daniels I've drank on Friday.

But for what it's worth, I cannot recommend the DiMarzio Cliplock straps enough. Definetly something to look into once you've the guitar repaired, or possibly a new guitar. And hey, if it's good enough for Petrucci? ;)

Have you considered what guitar you might get if the LP can't be fixed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

To be honest, I love my Les Paul, so something close to that would be nice. A really high end custom version of something like this would be nice too. http://www.poweralley.com/ESP/Hybrid400_vsb.jpg It has everything I love about Les Pauls, Strats and Teles!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Wow, that thing looks interesting to say the least.

Ever considered a Music Man? Since getting mine, it's pretty much been my numero uno guitbox. Truly awesome guitar that kicks the ass of just about every guitar I've ever played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I never liked EVHs musicman so I never thought about them. I think that ideally, I'd want some mad guitar making man to make exactly what I want, and not a brand.

Ah fair enough. A custom would be very cool indeed. What kind of specs would you be asking for?

Ever considered a Parker Fly? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Sure, If I want a guitar that looks like it broke its elbow ;) The hyrbid above would be great if given a custom treatment. It doesn't look very rock though, a bit indie actually, but if it performed. Oh man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

    My sympathies :(
I'm no expert but that looks totally repairable to me - still, dont let that minor detail stop you from buying a new geetar ;)

Sorry about that dude! I always cringe at pics like that, I would definitely check out the cost of a repair.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

    Ouch!

See thats one thing that puts me off Gibsons...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

How much would a new neck cost compared to the price of getting it repaired? Might be something to consider

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

It'd probably be close to the price of a new guitar, especially because it would have to be done by a professional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭Quattroste

:( Sorry man. That's really bad. Seen as your in Blessington I would let you borrow my Tokai Las Paul, but then again you might break it :p

Those photos sent chills down my spine! I've been using the rubber washers from Grolsch bottles as "straplocks", but I'm going to get proper ones now. And a better stand...

Those Grolsch washers are good enough for Dave Gilmore. Ref Live 8 video.......

I suppose as long as they're replaced regularly they might do the job. I've seen the guitarist from Ocean Colour Scene use 'em too.

While we're on the subject of straplocks, here's a pic i saw recently of what happens when you take a mega$$ guitar to a loca pub gig ( ) and are too cheap/stupid to put on straplocks.

The guitar is a rare, extrememly valuable (many, many thousands of euro) and collectible Ibanez JS10th chromeboy. Or should I say WAS.

    IMG_0928.jpg

Where in the vast, vast world would you find someone who a) would take such a valuable rare guitar to a tiny local gig, and b) forget to put straplocks onto it...?

    ->Limerick :rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,992 ✭✭✭Johnny Storm

VooDoo_Child, what's that guitar made of?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,706 ✭✭✭Voodu Child

    Luthite or some such.

A bit like a surfboard i gather (the white stuff in the middle), with a solid-ish gel coating (the brown stuff), and the chrome outside.

They're usually flimsy as hell (the chrome JS special editions), but 99% of buyers don't play them anyway, mint ones are usually worth several times the original price, so it's more of a collectors thing. If you want to play a JS, just buy a cheap JS1200

Never seen a black LP with cream P90's before. Looks cools. Did you you fit them Giblet?

Explain how the grolge(sp?) washers work? i dont get it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭NeMiSiS

They come on the top of bottles of beer.. You put the strap on, then the bottle top.. I suppose washer over it.. it loks like a ribber washer..

The previous owner had them installed and did a good job filling the cavity so they were the same size. I replaced them with some Seymour Duncan P90s though.

I'd take it to Derrick Nelson and see if he can fix it. It wouldn't be incredibly unusual for an inclined headstock to be a seperate piece on a neck, so it's not like it's going to make a bastard of the guitar anyway. Failing that, you can ask him to build you another from scratch. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

He'll have to wait for the second mortgage to go through first ;)

Hehe. That's what you get for not spending the first mortgage on guitars. Who needs property anyway? :)

just wondering Giblet was it dunlop strap locks you had on the LP? i just put dunlop strap locks on my epie les paul 2 days ago!!! the strap came off loads of times without them, luckly enough i cought the gitar every time, but was never be comfortable letting somebody else play my guitar!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Yeah they are, if you look at it closely, you can see a bunch of bearings which are used to hold it in. One of them fell out.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 25,872 Mod ✭✭✭✭Doctor DooM

Definitely repairable. This happened to a bass of mine, and was repaired by that little Irish music shop that used to be on Capel St. Was about 90 euro at the time. Took a while for it to settle and to get the action right, etc.

Derrick Nelson will sort that out beautifully but I think he usually has a waiting list...

yea same as mine. did you have the strap lock long? it says on the box "The strap will NOT come off ***under normal playing condtions***" i wonder what their defination of normal playing condtions are!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Frank, I'd say you'd be best off ditching those strap locks, and getting a DiMarzio Cliplock Strap.

Karl Hungus recommends DiMarzio Cliplock Straps exclusively. And when I say exclusively, I mean that in the very literal sense, I just will not buy another brand of strap any more, it just doesn't feel safe and secure without one. I've been using them for about 2 years now, I've never had a single issue with them, they're easily the sturdiest I've used, and I just cannot recommend them enough.
