[REQ] Apple Macbook

I'm just interested in picking up a new lappy for myself before I head to college. I'm looking at the cheapest one in this range in particular but I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could pick up one for any cheaper or are they all around the same price everywhere you look.

BTW. I'm aware of getting an educational discount so I'm looking to see if anyone knows of anywhere selling for less than €950.

    Thanks

Apple stuff is typically fixed price mate!

You won't get them cheaper elsewhere unless you've travelling to the States and can benefit from the strong exchange rate.

€950 is great value with the discount even for the lowest spec one. I paid €920 or so for it a month or two back but i'd a voucher.

You can order online from the education store. Go the the Irish Apple Store and there'll be a link there with the edu prices. You just need to fax in a copy of your student card after you order.

Otherwise, unless you're going to the States, it's unlikely you'll get a better price.

Sorry to thread-jack but have relatives going to NY towards the end of the year and am half-tempted to get them to get a MB or MBP while there.

I know at the current exchange rate I could save about €300+ on a 2.16Ghz MB with 2GB RAM and a 160GB HDD, which is pretty decent.

Obviously I'd need to get a new power adaptor and make sure they take it out of the box on the way back, but someone pointed out the issue of warranty - if I buy it in the US i'll have to return it there if there's a problem. Does this apply with Apple on lappys? Would I need to get their applecare protection (which would pretty much cancel out the saving)?

You don;'t actually need a whole new power adaptor, you only need the plug fitting which is pretty cheap to buy :)
I got mine for free from a mate but you could buy a travel pack if you needed one

If you buy a MacBook with or without apple care (which you can also purchase in the states) it has a worldwide warranty so don't worry about it breaking

I bought my MacBook 2.16Ghz, 2GB/Ram in the states in May and couldn't be happier, no problems signing up to the applecare I bought there even though I was told I had to register it to a US address it worked perfectly fine with an Irish one,

Personally given the savings with both the MacBook and its cheaper to buy AppleCare in the states its well worth getting both, you'll still save hundreds

Thanks for that - thought I had read somewhere that apple's warranty is international (makes sense for a laptop too). I assume it's the usual job - you can order a pick up and don't need to bring it anywhere yourself?

I missed out on a great dell offer on here the other day; wasn't planning on buying one but now I've reconsidered and am on the look out again. Even tempted to buy a bargain-basement one now until I get something better down the line.
If only I could get them to buy me an iMac while they were over there, then I could get a bargain basement laptop and still have use for it when the mac arrived!

Hmm... maybe they could pick up a mac mini for me :D

It's a standard 'figure of eight' connection, so you probably have dozens lying around the house anyway from stereos and the like.

I bought my MBP in Hong Kong while I was living there, and it's most definitely a worldwide warranty. I'm pretty sure you can buy Applecare here for it within the year if you decide to.

Best thing is book a visit through the apple website so all you have to do is show up at the time and you'll be able to get a member of sales staff without any waiting...thats what I did.

Might also be no harm in ringing ahead to make sure they have config you want....model I got..highend macbook (black) w/2GB Ram its most common so they have it all ready to go so I didn't even have to wait which was great :)

The only other savings available are €200 off the MBP or €70 off the macbooks in the O2 apple stores (theres one on grafton street that I know of).

Other than that theres only refurbished machines which offer any value.

You'd want to be very careful to check that O2 are stocking the updated macbook/macbook pros as often they hang on to old stock for ages and try to sell it off as the latest greatest even though it clearly isn't :)

This is especially true for the smaller stores and 3G stores imho
