    Just noticed this, this evening.

I don't recall seeing it there before, is this the place?.

Its always great to see a new station reported publically I must say.
Does anyone know if this is replacing another station in Wexford or is a welcome new addition ?

I could be very wrong but I have a vague memory of reading an article about how meteireann are changing the location of some of their sites like kilkenny because of increased UHI effect from new housing estates etc and johnstown castle will be replacing rosslare, but i hope i'm wrong because I really don't see why they'd shut down rosslare:confused:

Yep I remember reading about that too, I'm hoping this is unrelated as it appears to be be in a very different location to the Kilkenny one (just look at the rainfall figures for starters) and thus wouldn't be comparable.

Yeah there was a discussion about this on the forum awhile back alright.Rosslare is to close down and Johnstown castle is to replace it.

    God only knows why?

Weather Sation at Johnstown Castle has been around for a long time. Since 1914! That's when the recording of rainfall commenced. No idea if temperature and other elements started then, but if not, I'd wager they were long before Rosslare opened.

I'd be surprised if all recording at Rosslare will stop. I think they'll leave an automatic station there such as at Roches Point and Claremorris

Teagasc has a research centre at Johnstown Castle, research staff there were/are involved with agmet
    http://www.ucd.ie/agmet/

There has been a weather station there for as long as I remember, Agricultural Institute was founded 1958 or so, Johnstown castle being part of it from 1960. There was an agricultural college prior to that..

Fair dues to Met Eireann, they replied within 12 hours
Met Eireann is currently introducing a new generation of automatic
weather stations at many of our locations. The installation of such
equipment is a big undertaking and, before proceeding with it, we made
an assessment of the current and likely future suitability of the
station locations for weather measurements. The station at Rosslare
Harbour has problems with its exposure ( cliff, trees and buildings )
and this prompted us to choose Johnstown Castle as the location for our
new installation. The station at Rosslare Harbour is currently providing
a reduced number of hourly synoptic reports and this will eventually
    stop.

I assume in a few months we will hear something like

"Johnstown Castle...1000 millibars-falling slowly..." on the radio?

They seem to have replaced it with Buoy M5 with visibility reports from Tuskar Lighthouse! Also on met.ie:
