Do I need a referral for a new GP?

I moved last year to Wicklow from Dublin and I have been going to the same GP I've been going all my life for the various repeat prescriptions I need.
However its becoming a bit of a chore and an inconvenience to drive about 30 miles to see my GP just to pick up a prescription.

I really like the doctor I've been seeing pretty much all my life, but not sure what is needed to do to move to another GP. My doctor has all the various tests and medical history for me on their files which I 'd presume the new GP would want to see.

Never moved GP before so am at a loss as to what to do.

Should I just call a local one and try to make and appointment, or do I need a referral like with a dentist to get specialised work done by an Orthodontist?

    Thanks.

I chop and change GPs all the time and none has ever asked for a referral or enquired about previous GPs. (In saying that, I only need to go about once per year).

if you have a significant background medical history (or if you are getting repeat prescriptions) then your new GP should know what is going on with you. You can ask him to request your notes from your last GP - but you have to write and sign a letter authorising your old GP to release your notes to your new one.

I change GP every year and have never once asked for a referral! Referrals are only when you need to consult a specialist.

Just ask your current GP to forward your health and medical history to the new GP once you've found one. Shop around!
