Speed up my computer.

So I've had this computer for about a year now, and I think it's being bogged down by some malicious programs or stuff. I haven't really cleaned it because I'm not sure what the best programs to remove the stuff are.

I know that Spybot is okay, Adaware is okay, and HiJack This is also good, but what else could I use to clean my system? Like defrag it or something?

Basically I'm looking for any and all suggestions as to how to speed my computer's performance up, as well as clean it.

    Thanks.

Some ideas that come to mind.

Do full scans, not just quicks scans.

Try disk cleanup, chkdsk, disk defragmentation. ccleaner is a handy little utility.

I use superantispyware and avg antispyware too. The more anti spyware the merrier really.

You could use msconfig to see what is running in the background of your computer and uncheck those that you dont need to automatically start up.

After these you should see a good increase in performance.

If not you could run a memtest to see if your RAM is ok.

Only have one firewall and one AV running at once. Ensure your page file is 50% that of its maximum.

    Hope this helps

Defrag at least once a week and anytime you delete a large amount of data ! Also clear any cookies and temporary files from internet explorer. You could also go the search option and type in a search for *.tmp files and delete these !

Good advice. Frequency of defrag really depends on the type of stuff you do on a computer and volume of data movement on the HD. Defrag apps usually have an analyse option to see if defrag is necessary.

Id be wary of defragging too often if it is not necessary because the process is quite hardware intensive and can reduce life expectancy of the drive.

I have mine scheduled once a fortnight using scheduled tasks.

There comes a time to reinstall :)

Next time you do reinstall, make two partitions, put all your programs and windows files on one partition, and all of your data on the other. Then create a Norton Ghost image of the windows files ones, you can pretty much reset your computer as you need to.

    i'm with grasshoppa...

get windows the way you want it as much as you can, ie, install your most frequently used/favourite programs, service packs/windows updates/patches etc etc. then do the image.

What OS are you using? What type of partition is your drive(s)? Defrag doesn't do much for NTFS partitions as they do a good job of keeping themselves clean.
