Hey all, I've been paying emergency tax for the past 7 months as I never got around to getting my certificate of tax credits, well I did so the other day and should be now paying less tax on my wages, but I'm just a bit confused about how I go about getting the emergency tax I've paid back. My mum rang Revenue for me and they said my boss pays it, but my boss said if I go to the tax office then they gie me a cheque, so I'd just like to knoe if anyone else has been in the same situation how they got their tax back?

    Much thanks!

    go to http://www.revenue.ie/

find the contact number for your local office call them and ask for your tax back as you have been paying emergency

as far as i know they will send the details to your employer who will give it back to you in your next pay cheque. otherwise you will be sent a cheque

It should be included in your next paycheck once your employer is notified.

Else the revenue will refund you directly iirc.

Your employer is supposed to do it following notification from Revenue. If they can't/won't then get in touch with Revenue and explain the situation.

Your tax office phone number can be retrieved here

    https://www.revenue.ie/wiclo/details.jsp

Call revenue, go into the tax office or send them a letter.

I too am on emergency tax and I called Revenue a couple of weeks back. They sent me out a piece of paper of sorts, with tax credits and things. They said they also sent one to my employer. They said it is up to them to put it in my paycheck. I will see if they have done this next week, but I won't hold my breath...

There are two ways of getting your tax back.

The first is where you go to the tax office and they issue a cheque. For this to happen you usually have to leave the job because it's when you bring the p45 to the tax office that they process what you are due back.

The alternative is where your job returns the emergency tax after the tax cert is issued. This should only take three or four weeks to do. The hurdles pop up if you are haven't been working for a portion of the year like a student so it takes a little extra time to calculate what you should be entitled to. I was with Apple and they returned my tax to me and I am with the Rev Commissioners now and they gave me tax back after four weeks.

In order for the taxman to issue the cert, they need the pay and tax from the job before. That's where the p45 comes in. Once they enter the new employment, a cert is sent out with your credits.

    Johmo.
