iChat - Strange Problem

Myself and the girlfriend have Macbooks, both up to date with 10.4.10. When we are in my house, on the same wireless network, iChat works fine for video. When she's on her own network at home, it doesn't work. I was on an eircom hotspot today, and she was on her work network, and again, not working.

    Any ideas?

Will post the error message later.

So it works on your Bonjour network but not across the tinternet!

Have you checked our network/port settings in iChat?

Never even thought of that. I've looked in the setting for iChat and seen the aol server, with port 5190. There's another setting below it for connecting through a proxy but that's not being used. I've enabled port 5190 on my NAT so I'll see if that does the trick.

Fairly new to Macs so not as good with them as I was with Windows.

What protocol are you using? Jabber?

Basically iChat enables Bonjour chat which is separate to any IM account you might setup in iChat. So when you are on the same wifi the Bonjour account is working for you, but you must not have your IM a/c settings correct.

I'm guessing its probably Jabber you are using in which case:

is what you want, under prefs/accounts/server settings

If you are not using jabber then google "ichat port <whatever protocol you are using> "

That should sort it, but if not there are other things it could be.

Tried all of this but no go. Anyone want to post a guide for this for an eircom router? My port is 5190 according to iChat. I've tried adding a custom service (though I'm not sure if I should be picking Port Forwarding or Trigger Ports)

    Any and all help appreciated.

What protocol are you trying to link over?

I'm using AOL and Bonjour, via iChat.

Unless you mean something else. I left my course before the networking module!! :)
