So, after doing some portraits with the 85 1.2L today, it's an amazing lens for the 1.2, such a shame about the min focusing distance though, I'd love to be able to get in closer!

    Anyways, to what matters:

All images are clickable to see in large, on a black background, which I reccommend.

A few more on my Flickr.

Lovely lens alright, if the focus speed was quicker it would be definitely on my list for purchase. Great shots

I could handle the slow AF, but on a full frame, the min focus distance (95cm) is a killer. Then again, at 12.8mp, I can afford to crop a bit :)

    Thanks lads!

first would be my fave, it has a lovely family feeling. Second one's beautiful too though.

I'm too lazy to look - did you shoot wide open? I want 1.2 :(

    Yep, all shot at 1.2

    What's the point of a 1.2 if you don't ;)

    Cheers! :D

Here's my x processed versions of the first too, using my patented technique:

Once again, clickable for larger versions on black :)

The second shot is quality, very impressive capture.
You must have a way with your subjects in order to get such good portraits.
Care to share any tips? :)

The dof makes the third image look a bit odd and photoshopped with it's composition. I'd like to see a crop of it, as it detracts from the subject imo.

don't mess with no.2! it's the best photo i've seen posted here in weeks, possibly months.

    Magic, too late!

Part of my B&W technique is cross processing the image to get the tonal range I want, so I see this result first :p

Richy, with kids, pretty much make stupid jokes, let them play with your camera gear - they love reflectors. Parents relax pretty soon once they see the kids are relaxed. With adults, just having a chat and a laugh really! Giving them a fair idea of what you're doing, and how what you're doing works relaxes them a lot, I think... If someone can tell you what they want, and follow up on it, it brings a lot of confidence into the session. This session only lasted 20 mins, because I(we) got the shots we wanted in that 20 mins... I wouldn't to work much longer unless it was a model!

The 1.2 can produce some really strange results as for DOF - Will play around with some crops, didn't think of that at first, but has given me an idea. Cheers!

None of the above, I think you fed the kid biscuits! Check the boys top lip in the 2nd photo large ;)

Great shots btw , expecially the 2nd one. I like the processing too, looks very natural.

The minimum focusing is a pain on the 85mm f1.8 too, it would be nearly worth sticking an extension tube on it to get in close.

    Balls.

I knew I forgot to clone something out.

    ;):p

Border, what's the min dist. on the 1.8? Same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,265 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

    Same

I've used one of the tubes on my 70-200 so I could shoot something closer to me... if you have the light for it, it's worth a bash.

You have a definite way with your subjects, you must show me how :D

    lovely shots Fajitas

that's one lens that I've been a bit envious that Canon owners have that Nikon owners don't.

what is the min focusing distance? It's 3 feet on the nikon 85 1.4 - looks to be about the same.....

    Hi,
it's 95cm, so it's pretty much the same. Its not bad when you consider the 1.8 version weighs in at 85cm, not a whole lot of difference there*

    *except in price ;)
