    Yep Skype is broken today.
    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/16/skype_down/

I was actually using it for a while this morning and noticed it claimed I was off line. When I changed network connections (part of some testing I was doing ) I couldn't reconnect.

Just had skype come back for about 5 min and off again.

Must be getting closer to fixing the problem.

Ah, beginning to regret the decision to move our entire call-centre over to Skype... well, I'd regret it if it didn't mean two whole days of no annoying calls :D

Still down. Gotta love the Skype blog entries, so American and "casual".
Apologies for the delay, but we can now update you on the Skype sign-on issue. As we continue to work hard at resolving the problem, we wanted to dispel some of the concerns that you may have. The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber attack. We love our customers too much to let that happen. This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software.

So they love their customers enough to protect them from cyber attacks but not from sh1t Skype code. That's a belter!

hmmm, just so happens that BT's so-called resilient data center went down around then.

just so happens that skype is hosted in bt's so-called resilient data center.
Doesn't help that the main engineers are all sleepy sleepy in their beds at night and have to drive all the way back to work to fix the problem.

Move your entire call centre to Skype?

Pardon me for asking, but are u mad??

I see the Skype breakdown has been put down to Russian hackers.

Skype says it was caused by the latest Microsoft Update (AKA windowsupdate) which required a reboot this time. Millions of PCs that had Skype running rebooted around the world during a short time-frame after doing an automatic Microsoft Update.

"On Thursday, 16th August 2007, the Skype peer-to-peer network became unstable and suffered a critical disruption. The disruption was triggered by a massive restart of our users’ computers across the globe within a very short timeframe as they re-booted after receiving a routine set of patches through Windows Update.

The high number of restarts affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction that had a critical impact."

Yet another reason not to allow microsoft update to run on a machine automatically....

    Not quite what they said.

The large number of reboots, together with a previously unknown bug in the Skype Pear to Peer software caused the problem.

IE They were not able to distribute the increase in log in requests throughout their peer to peer network causing the central servers to fail.

IE Not a Microsoft problem but a previously unknown bug in the Skype distribution software.

    Not quite what they said.
I quoted exactly what Skype said at the time (though I notice that this has changed subsequently).

The only observation I added concerned the wisdom of users allowing microsoft (or indeed any) update software to run automatically.
