Just buy them at the pier then jump on the boat. I would suggest you get up for the early boat (9 ish) because the later boats gets busy.

You can just buy them when you get there. Don't remember them being particularly expensive....

I'm only in san fran for three days and was told to book in advance as they sell out a week or two in advance.

So i'll be ok with an early morning start??? Would hate to miss out on the trip

I'm heading over myself in a few weeks and have booked tickets online. I know you can buy them when you get there but I've heard that they sell out during the summer months. A friend was there 2 years ago and missed it because tickets were sold out for three or four weeks! I bought mine on www.alcatrazcruises.com they seemed to be the cheapest and you can print your tickets out and bring them with you so no queueing at all :)

I was on the island twice last month. www.alcatrazcruises.com is the only place you should buy tickets to see alcatraz. Alcatraz is regulated by the national parks service and only one company is allowed to land on the island (the company at the above URL). Other company's sell cruises that pass the island but never land. Book at the above site and the cost of your ticket includes the admission to the prison house and the audio tour (which is excellent. Definately book your tickets in advance as they do sell out. Two tips: 1. take one of the ranger led tours if there is one starting not too long after you arrive, these are 1 hour walking tours with stories and legends etc. 2. Try to book an evening tour ( i think they only run towards the end of the week). It's a bit more eery and if the sun goes down you get a good view back at san fran all lite up.

A little late now for you, but I got the hotel where I was staying to book things like that for me and they were dead sound about it. Everything was there waiting for me when I checked in!
