Make a dealer an offer?

    Hi
    Forgive my innocence but I'm looking at buying a new car from a dealership.
    Are they negotiable on the price?
    If so by what margin?
    Its a 40k car.

    Or could I ask for extras to be thrown in?
    If so what?

    Any help appreciated

    Simply ask the dealer "how much for cash?".

    You'll get damn all of a new MINI, and not much off a BMW or Merc. btw.

    Look for things that cost the dealer a lot less than they are worth to you... Extended Warranty, AA cover, GAA Tickets ;) you get the picture.

    Need to know if you have a trade-in and what type of car you're getting.

    If you're not trading in and thus paying in cash you should get at least €2k off if not a bit more. Though as Henry Ford says you won't get anything off a mini and some other brands don't have the margin to be reduced.

    Speaking from experience I was able to get 7% off a VW golf from grange motors as i was paying in cash (and got them to throw in the mats €133 for free)

    If the dealer has a lot of interest in this particular car - or if it's an easy seller, then you're not likely to get much off as he'll just sell it to someone else who is prepared to pay a bit more.

    But no harm in asking what the bottom line is.

    Also shop around.

    Last August when I was deciding between a golf and an A3 I went to all the major dealerships.

    I found foster motors to be a complete joke. Maybe it's because I was dressed in a t-shirt and oneills and look quite young but they didn't seem to take me serously at all - as if they didn't think i had €25-€30k to spend. When asking about a cash discount on the golf the guy was very cagey and wouldn't answer and when i asked the a3 audi guy he said no discount he'll throw in an umbrella! (as the a3's sell themselves apparently).

    Then both in belgard and grange i was offered decent cash discounts off both brands (though the VW discount was greater as margins are greater than on the audi) - went with grange as they (both audi and VW) were spot on and couldn't recommend them enough. Belgard sales people couldn't manage to return my calls so no way giving them that amount of money!

    Anyway sorry about the rambling but do shop around (presuming you're ordering one to be custom built)

    Haven't a clue about Saab margins but do ask.

    And just because you're getting a loan it's still a 'cash' deal as there's no trade-in. Just do not go through the garage to arrange financing go direct to your bank - best of luck!

    It's a pity then that Pottery Rd are part of the Grange package. Let's them down completely.

    Nope you can get any warrenty work performed in any VW approved garage - buy in grange and get warrently/sevicing work done in brady's in castlenock

    On a SAAB, I would guess the dealer would have at least 10% margin to play with.

    1. I would expect there to be no charge for metallic paint.

    2. I would expect there to be no charge for a full set of SAAB car mats

    and

    3. I would expect there to be no charge for a full tank of fuel.

    Now, if you go in looking for a car which has to be ordered, your bargaining position is weak. On the other hand, if they have a car, in the showroom, available, ex-stock, there's a good chance you can get a better deal off the list price.

    Apparently the position you should take is to be very clinical, as follows.

    1. Decide the spec level of the car you want, exactly.

    2. Find out the price of this car.

    3. Ask for the best CASH price for the car

    and

    here's the best bit (be prepared to bluff it out)

    4. Having received the price, at Stage 3, above, take time to calculate an offer, below what you've been quoted, and something at which you are prepared to walk away from.

    5. Make this offer to the Sales person and say nothing. Absolutely nothing, until the Sales person agrees to your figure. Let him speak a number of times, but do not answer until he comes down to your level. Scientific study has shown the first person to break this silence is the person who will lose out in making the deal.

    Remember the Sales people make hundreds of these deals every year, you might only make one every few years. Don't let them have the upper hand.




    (And, if you are prepared to wait, there will be some ex-rentals coming back to dealerships in early September. Perhaps a bargain can be had?)

    My final piece? (I'd get the best Mercedes C-class I could get, if I was spending €40k of my own money on this type of car.)

    Here's a tip - if you wanna be laughed out of the showroom, ask for GAA tickets :rolleyes:

    I'd say there's fairly big discounts on Saabs. Play one dealer off the other, call a Saab dealer in Cork or somewhere (most places will wanna see you in person to offer a discount though).

    BTW, there's more than a few BMW main dealers prepared to do discounts, they just don't have the Joe Duffy name above their door and you'll have to venture outside the Pale a little.

    You learn those from Stephen Boyle? Never tried it with buying a car.

    You actually just reminded me of something. My uncle is a bit of a GAA nut. About 10 years ago he was opening up a new restaurant. He couldn't get his hands on tickets for the All Ireland Final. He told Coke he would go with Pepsi unless they got him tickets. He now has two restaurant serving Pepsi only. Pepsi delivered when Coke wouldn't. True story.

    A good few years ago i did just that :) literally 15 minutes of dead silence as we both waited for the other to speak first. In end sales man just got up and walked away. I did the same a few minutes later. This happened on a monday afternoon ...he called me on the Friday afternoon and met me half way on the price differance and threw in the first service free to clench the deal as i had requested on monday :)
    The first service free is a good one to ask for especially on a new car :) costs the garage very little and saves you a couple of hundred

    I've only ever heard of a dealer calling someone with an offer once before. it was my sister's bf and he loves it. A zero something Camry. I've heard of playing hard to get with women, but never cars.

    Anybody can get €2k off a €40k Saab by just asking "how much for cash?"

    To squeeze the last possible euro of margin out of the dealer is a completely different ballgame. Golferx is pretty much on the ball imho. Always make sure the dealer knows that you are willing and able to sign the deal there and then. That you are not messing them about against other makes / other dealers. Never mention any other deal

    Keep cool and make more money in 30 minutes than you normally make in weeks or even months :cool:

    @OP - that the 150BHP diesel?

    i testdrove a 23k auto IS200 a year or so back. made sure she knew i wasn't interested, she offered a pittance against my trade in and i walked away. 2 weeks later i got a phone call to say the price was down 2k and my trade in was suddenlly worth 1k more. if they're that desparate to get rid of it there must be something wrong.
