I just got a call off a good friend of mine, He has files on an external portable drive..
They work fine when connected to his laptop..
But when he moves the portable drive to his desktop system the folders show but each folder is empty and on right clicking they show as empty..

I have never experienced this so thought I would ask here.
the portable drive is fat32 but the files are all small so the 4gb should not be a problem. and anyway this does not explain why the portable drive works fine with the laptop.
Both systems are running xp. everything else seems to be fine..

Well, the external drive is just plug and play .. I have a few of these drives myself and never needed a driver for any of them..

I know you've probably checked this, but have you ticked the "display hidden files and folders" in the folder options?

that happened to me once, boy was my face red!

No its not a hidden file problem !
I feel like the guy asking the doctor for advice for a friend because he is to embarrassed to admit it is in fact himself needing help...
BUT IT IS A FRIENDS PROBLEM ! :):)

Just because it's plug and play doesn't mean that the drivers (plug 'n' play still uses drievrs that are automatically installed) were installed correctly.

Next time he plugs it in go to device manager and make sure there are no extra yellow "!" symbols under the Universak System Bus Controllers section (assuming its a USB drive) and under disk drives for plug 'n' play sata drives.

It's a long shot but you never know and it's the only thing i can think of at the moment.

if the drive is NTFS formatted it might be security setting
right click , security , you might have to take ownership and set permissions for everyone
