We are just about to start building a two story 3000sq ft house. Do i need to put steel mesh in the subfloor, i have had different feedback, Also is there a location where i can look up this type of information to ensure i comply with all the current standards .

yes, i'd put in A343 mesh with the rebar

the current required/minimum standards are contained in the house building manual is available from easons & waterstones -
an absolute must read cost 47.50

It depends on what type of floor and floor thickness you are installing. Also, the ground conditions would affect the sub floor construction.

Typical ground floor slab consturction consists of:

150dp Grade 35N20 concrete slab with
A142 mesh 30mm from top of slab on
    Insulation, dpc/radon barrier on
    50mm sand on
200mm rolled and compacted clause 804 hardcore

This is a typical slab construction, your situation may not be typical!!!! If you have any more info, let me know and we can determin the best slab construction.

Just on mesh, DO NOT allow your contractor to "walk in" the mesh. You have no control on where the mesh ends up and you may as well leave it out!

    Regards,

    John

The floor details are as follows.
150mm conc slab on rigid polystyrene insulation board, on radon and damp proof barrier , on min 150 blinded hardcore, Fit radon sump and associated piping for extraction of radon gas. Are there differnet situations that require steel mesh or when its not required ? or is it used all the time now ? .

Thanks i hadn't realised that the ground type was a factor, but it makes total sense when you mention it. ( as you can see am totally new to all this building stuff) Thanks also for the tip on the " walk in" .
