Sorry about this(I already asked this question on another board, but this seems more active)
Ok I just bought a new laptop with build in wireless. When I went to connect to my broadband connection it asked for a security key or catchphrase, where can I find this?

    Thanks.

What type of router have you?
You need to get the MAC address from your laptop,

On your laptop, in XP you go to run/cmd then in the next window type ipconfig/all
What it calls 'Physical address' (XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX) is your MAC number - is it the same as under the laptop?

You have to instruct your router to let the laptop with that MAC number connect and then secure the connection.

If by any chance you're using an Aolynk router on Smart I'd be happy to talk you through it over the phone.

I'm afraid I don't know the set up for other routers.
Did your ISP not give you instructions?

So the router is wireless and your trying to connect to it. Is the security key it keeps asking for, the WEP key? If spurious' solution doesn't work, Type your router's IP address into your browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1 but it might have it written on the actual router somewhere). Then find the WEP key. Itshould be under 'security' or something. Try to connect on the Laptop and enter the WEP key when it asks.

    Good luck

Eh, I have a Toshiba Satellite if that is any use. The router I use is Netopia.
Why when I bought a Belkin wirless for my old laptop, I had none of this trouble?

    Thanks for the help guys.

I don't think this is correct.

Start off with a wired conenction. The router should have come with a standard network cable. If it didn't you need to get one.

Open a web browser and point it to 192.168.0.254 or 192.168.1.254 (depends on the model).

Go into the Wireless settings, you will find your wireless key in there. It will be a long hexadecimal number something like af63cb2ae312ac

This is what you are looking for. You will not be able to find this without first connecting to the router. You will not be able to connect to the router without a cable. :)

Yes,it's not necessary to limit the connections to certain MAC numbers, it's just how I set mine up, so that other laptops cannot connect, even if they have the key.

I think Netopias might be 192.168.1.1 to access the router.
