I was contacted by a friend who'd worked for this people before. They need a photographer to shoot their 21st Anniversary.

I'm not interested myself, but someone else could:

it's a bit cheeky asking for a pro, and then say it's a great way to 'gain valuable work experience', and then say experience is a necessity?

And then not want to pay for the "pro's" time....

was thinking all of the above myself on first reading it. Theyre looking for a pro or semi-pro with their own kit but don't want to pay. I'd do the gig for free, keep the files and charge them for prints or for the right to display the images :D

If the event was so important, surely they wouldn't be going the cheapskate route?!?

I edited my first post because changed my mind and didn't want to express my opinion about this companies. It's a charity company, but they do charge for their workshops and memberships. I do find them myself a bit cheeky too. I wouldn't mind doing charity work, but they ask for your own equipment, examples of previous work, like if all of these came for free...

After reading it yesterday I thought I might volunteer for it if I was free on the day. Then I read the 'about us' part of their website and somewhere between the government funding and fulltime staffing I decided not to.

I was going to post my feelings on this earlier but held off. Now is a different story, cheeky f*****s (hope that is enough *'s) some amount of requirements for a free job.

That's disgraceful. I'd do what rymus suggested.
Go along, be all polite, take the shots for free.
Then charge for prints and high-res images!

from the sounds of it they'd probably then sue you stating that you had no permission OR that if you did come to take pics that you consented or some BS.

plus they are with the govenrment so they can afford it the cheap sods.

Unless it's expressly set out in some kind of contract that you have no rights to the photos of the evening, you can do whatever you wish to protect your copyright.

And anyone that would go and do a nights work and simply hand over a whole load of photos at the end of it needs their head seeing to. At a very basic level theyre just chancing their arm to see if they can get away with having a free photographer at the event. Hopefully nobody that can anyway competantly use a camera will give them the time of day.

In fact, if I can work myself into a woefully bad mood tomorrow morning I might write a disgruntled email to them :D

I don't really see it as beyond the scope of a non-profit organization to ask people to donate time and/or resources to their cause. In fact, thats probably part the reason they can afford to pay for some full-time staff, etc. I'm not so sure they should be trying to make volunteers feel so indebted to them though. That gets my goat a little. They should be a little more humble bout the whole thing. All too a bit self-righteous for me to be honest.

Laughing.. ok seriously guys that website gives waaaaaay the wrong impression! My best mate was chairperson there up to a short while ago and I still know a lot of people in the organisation, I've worked for them myself in the past (voluntary and paid..). They get a teensy bit of funding, most of their staff are voluntary (or work full-time for part time wages), their offices are in bits.... I think what they are looking for (and yes - they could have worded it better) is someone with more than a point & shoot who'd like to learn from the experience and stick it in their portfolio. Its a youth organisation - that's who they aim this stuff at. TBH if I wasn't tied up so much with college, kids etc I'd put myself in for it..
