Can someone please explain the meaning of "throw a rod" in the following sentence?

If you’re not careful, you’ll lose pistons or throw a rod, and lose the race.

'Throw a rod' or 'throw a leg out of bed' refers to a sequence of events where, ultimately, a connecting rod (conn rod - connects the pistons to the crankshaft) comes adrift and often comes out through the side of the engine block. Essentially the engine is then fcuked good and proper!
