    Hey all,

I recently bought a turntable for playing old records.

I've connected it to my amp using Cambridge audio phono cables.

In order to hear the sound I have to turn the amp up really really high. Why is this? Does this mean I need to buy a pre-amp for the turntable?

What amp are you using by the way? Its easier to help with that kind of info.

Yes , most turntables need a pre-amp , however check the inputs you are connected to on your amp. Does your amp have a phono input ? If so this is what you should connect to as this input usually caters for signal from a turntable , if not and your just connecting to a standard aux input then your probably going to need a pre-amp.

yup, as mathias said, if you don't have a phono input on your amp you will need a preamp. The difference between a phono input and a normal input is that the phono input has the preamp built in. hence you shouldn't hook anything but a record player(or anything else that needs a preamp) up to a phono input.

Richersounds.ie do a couple of cheap and cheerful phono amps.

If you wwould also like the option of plugging your turntable directly into a USB port on a pc to convert to digital then you could try this pre-amp

Much better option than the plastic "USB turntables" now available. Other options (some cheaper) on their website as well and postage to Ireland is £10
