I bought a Seagate 120GB External hard drive in Singapore in November for about Eur90, & the fan simply stopped in April. Seagate never again.

I call Seagate, & they will replace free of charge under warranty, but referred me to one of their agents for recovery of all of my photos, music files etc - the photos being irreplaceable.

Quote for the recovery service ? Approx Eur 1,200 - no, thats not a typo - Eur1,200.

Anyone know of some small computer workshops in Dublin who might take this on ? If its only the fan this should be doable.

I seem to remember driving by some with Chinese lettering on Parnell St ?

    Help !!

Not sure if a general pc/repair shop would repair an external drive but you could try ringing a few to check. quite a few in dublin, just google; pc repair dublin .....

that quote to recover the data must be wrong. All they need to do is open the external case and put the hard disk into a pc/ laptop depending on the type of disk and copy off the data.
You could do it yourself but it would probably void the warranty.
I'm sure any the pc repair shops would get you the data for a lot less.

<I should add; thats if the hard disk hasnt been damaged>

Try www.notebookrepair.ie think they should easily be able to transfer data at far less than the above quote

Why are you looking to recover the files? Would fixing the fan not make it usable again?

If the drive was working you could recover the files yourself.

can you not just take out the harddrive and connect it directly to your pc. if you only have a laptop get a usb to ide/sata adapter off ebay for about 10 euro.

why not just open the Seagate ext drive - take the hd out and buy a 20euro one from ebay or a more expensive one if you need a fan.

Can you actually see the info on the drive ??
Maybe the elecrtics of the HD are gone but the HD itself is fine.

get a HD case off ebay to check if the HD is ok.

Are you sure that quote is not for recovery of a damaged harddrive because thats what it sounds like.

What do you mean by the fan doesn't work? Does the harddrive spin up? i.e. are you sure its just the fan that is not working?

    Hi,
Firstly I don't recall seeing an external hard drive of that size with a fan in it..If you do not hear noise or just a clicking noise then the hard drive itself has failed..this can be caused by dead circuitry or damaged actuator arm or faulty heads..data can usually be recovered but may require replacement parts which you will have to pay for whether the data is recovered or not. If it needs to be repaired under clean room conditions then it will cost you money..dataclinic are among the cheapest I have come across in this area of recovery..for that size disk done under clean roon will cost you bout €600 plus whatever replacement parts are required for the drive. You can also try the freezer trick on ur drive to see if it frees it up (google it) As far hard drives these days they are cheap and flimsy as ****..last year Google had a 45% fail rate on their hard drives!! that is massive!! It seems that everyone needs at least three copies made of their data these days as the drive failure rate is that high!!
    Hope this helps
