how can I connect to a mac from a different mac over the internet? I'm away from home for sometime and had to show my girlfriend something on my home iMac. she just cant understand on the phone what I'm trying to say :)
Is there any remote desktop connector's available? if yes, how secure are they?

    Thanks in advance

While Apple Remote Desktop is nice and all its far to expensive for what the op wants to use it for ;)

Logmein gets my vote, free and simple enough to use.
Logmein.com uses 256bit SSL connection so its pretty secure :D

    What they said ^^

Logmein is great because its free, unlike remotedesktop.

Could try Timbuktu® or SpyMe, personally though, it would be LogMeIn or top of the list Chicken of the VNC

Think the OP might have any problems explaining the intricacies of VNC to his gf ? I mean if the reason he is doing this is because she can't understand what he is telling her . . .

Just a thought. But CotVNC gets my vote although I have Remote Desktop installed anyway.

Connected: Microsoft have just released a new version of it's remote desktop software for mac allowing macusers to take control of WindowsXP clients and servers. Just a heads up.

Yeah I was reading about that, very handy!!

As for the OP, yeah remote desktop is the easiest to get your head around, certainly user friendly, but at a cost, which seems a bit excessive for a one off job, as this sounds like.

CotVNC IMO would be the way to go.

that's news to me, especially considering I was using it around two weeks to connect from my imac to my macbook

ah... right, found the beta for macs, weird though, could only get to it via Version Tracker. They seem to have the Logmein for Mac page pretty well hidden! Originally I could only see the system requirements page for the PC Logmein free, that says it is not a compatible download for Macs unless they're running Linux.
Cant wait to try this out when the daughter rings me with some weird and wonderful problem with her iBook!

Copilot, tried this one, a bit slow but works good even on a Mac!

Only if you have dot mac and I think its more aimed at a single user with multiple machines rather than multiple users over multiple machines.

ARD, Chicken of the VNC or Logmein would be my preferred options.

Sorry, yeah forgot to mention the .Mac thing, but if you're offering ARD as an alternative, then .Mac is a fair chunk cheaper.

And as I read the OP, he just wanted to control his home PC to show his girlfriend something, so even getting a 10-Client License for ARD is overkill. CotV involves a lot of setup to run over the web, and would require a degree of technical skill.

But logmein (for windows anyway) would do the same thing as Back to my Mac.

I messed around with a good few of these lately to deal with a client at work and I have to say, if one were to consider purchasing, Remote Desktop is about as easy as it gets. Great application. For free ones, I'll stick to what I said earlier, but if I thought I was going to be regularly using an app like this id just fork out for Remote Desktop for an easy life.

I agree totally. In work I manage 50+ Macs all over the country and ARD is just the dogs...you know.
