PS3 Internet Connection

Hey all. I'm having trouble setting up my PS3 for wireless internet - it wont automatically pick up my IP address. This falls between the realm of PS3 and Broadband connectivity, was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem? Or know where I can get details of my internet connection so as to input them manually?

    Cheers.

firstly, do some simple troubleshooting. is your router set up for wireless internet, is the ps3 too far away (you'd want to live in a mansion for that) etc. etc.

...have you checked the router is compatible, IIRC, the PS3 only supports 802.11G.(?)

Sorry to be such an imbecile....

I know the router supports wi-fi because my laptop works....I don't know if it's IIRC, any ideas on how I could find out?

I could try move the PS3 but I doubt it's a range issue.

Could I manually put in the IP address that's showing on my laptops internet connection?

have a look at www.portforward.com as they have a list of routers and how to get into them and set ip's and forwarding and stuff like that.

as for myself when i set my PS3 to access my router via wireless :

    1) set up my router to give out an extra ip for the PS3 to use.

    2) took note of my wireless security settings to put into the PS3 .

    3) entered the above info into the PS3 and that was it as far as i recall.

btw what router do you have ?

That's something I havn't done (because I don't know how to do it) and I imagine that's what's preventing the PS3 to connect automatically.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly - I'm with eircom and have a netopia wireless modem I think?

Id say your wireless is encryped, as most netopias are by default.
You can access the settings, assuming their standard by clicking this
    http://192.168.1.254
and logging in with whatever username and password you set.
    click on wireles then
just as a test then, turn off privacy and restart your netopia.
See if ps3 works now. If it does, then you have 2 choices.
    1. leave it unsecured. If other houses are nearby, i wouldnt do this.
    2. Secure it, but write down the settings, and input them in for your ps3, im sure the manual will have a section on network settings.

I rang up Eircom and told them the situation thinking that they could give me one of the codes the ps3 asks for when you try and set up the connection. The guy gave me a code like 20 digits long or something so I entered that in and the ps3 then asked me for another code?

I know I'm a right noob but can anybody tell me which 2 codes I need and where I can get them?

I have 2 pc's running off a wirelss connection as is so can I just connect to that with the ps3 without messing with my router's config (Because I have no idea what I'm doing)?

    Thanks in advance.

    for what its worth,

you are entering your WEP key, and you have to enter it twice. Advice so far has been good.. open your laptop, go to your browser, type in 192.168.1.254,

    http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/&/WEBCGI.EXE/,/

you need your playstation security setting to match your eircom router.

If you are having hassle with this i would advise getting someone over to help you, know the netopia can be a bit fiddly.

Hey mate maybe you can shed some light on my problem. I have a WEP key on my home network and I type it in on the PS3 - no problems there. I'm pretty sure I need to tell my Netopia to throw out an extra IP addy my PS3 can use; it scans for one but just times out. Any ideas on how to do this?

i am far from a network expert. I know there is a thing called DHCP, basically automatically gives out the ip addresses. Moral of the story is if your network has this turned off, you will have to enter it manually and vice versa. read up on DHCP in the eircom support and the PS3 support..

    hope it helps

Cheers mate I'm actually going to ring eircom tomorrow and talk nicely; it'll also help to know what various things do.

I know this thread is a bit old sorry but I didn't want to create a whole new thread.

I'm having trouble connecting to the net. I'll go through what I'm doing step by step just in case I'm doing something wrong.

On my PS3 menu I go to settings> Network settings> Internet connection settings > Wireless> Scan> It then gives me an option of 2 connections (Neither of them have any info under SSID though) So I choose the strongest connection, assuming that's mine. The security is WEP> Then it asks me for an SSID. What exactly is an SSID and where do I get it can anyone tell me?> It then asks me for the WEP. Same question, where do I get the WEP code. As far as I know a WEP is the security code for the connection?

When it comes to wireless networks I'm a complete retard so any help at all would be much appreciated. Also I'm using a Mac which I'm not at all used to and is slowing down the whole process for me. Sorry for being such a n00b :(. Thanks in advance,

    Tim.

I THINK SSID is the Network ID. You should see it on your mac when it gives you a list of wireless networks to connect to.
