Is there anyone here who went into a bank at entry level without a Degree? Is it a big disadvantage or could you still work your up? What are the assentments like? Does anyone have any experience?
    Thank You

Degree just means you'll earn more and more career prospects, chances for promotion etc. Afaik the "bank" work available to unqualified people is cashier and customer support only which I'd say are mind-numbing roles. My 2c :-S

I worked in the bank as work experiance for my course for 9months, then got wise and went back to college, swearing I'd never go back, however then no jobs came knocking when I finished so when they heared I was looking for work they asked me back, I have gone for promotions since I have joined with my extra qualifictions but they didnt stand to me as I wasnt working in the bank long enough to get the job apparently or some bs story like that they gave the job to a young one who only had her leaving cert behind her and 2 years extra than me in the office the job. So I dont think it matters if u have qualifications or not, as all they seem to look for is ur fecking leaving cert results all the time.

(I know someone who left school at 16 now in his 30's very clever fellow. but no leaving cert, has worked for all the high tech places through the major IT issues but cause he has no leaving cert he cant get a full time job in the bank but is good enough to do contract work for the bank!)

so to answer ur query finish college at least u have that to fall back on, if the bank doesnt work out for u.

Working in a cashier / entry level job in the bank is horrendous. I did it for three months. This is probably just me, but being surrounded by (apologies) individuals of below average intellience, zero ambition and fairly closed minds... it's horrible.

while i have not worked in a bank i would imagine that you would be better off replacing leaving cert with hard/good workers in that sentence

i have come to realise how much on the job experience and hard work pay off regardless of qualifications.

i got offered a promotion when i handed in my notice the other day over at least 4 people with degrees in a related area and it is simply because i work my ass off coz the people i work with are boring and otherwise my day would crawl by.

having said all that i hope to go back to college in september

A friend of mine works in the bank, she did 2 years of a 4 year teaching degree before she went in.

Depends what you do with it-I did a year and a half in a financial institution when I left school before i "escaped" --did lot of travelling ,jobs etc before returning to work in a bank from scratch again(not cashier)

Have been here a year now and this time next year i will be a fully qualified financial advisor along with having a Diploma courtesy of the bank...So my advice is if youre mature enough and willing to put a bit of effort in for a couple of years youll go somewhere...then again you could always take the job and wind up like the rest of the "dead beats" with no ambition!

Glacier if you're so worried about having no formal third level edication, why don't you do an Open University or go to college at night?

What job do you actually want to do?

ok maybe its bad, but how much per hour do you get? EUR 11 at least, I for one will do almost anything if the money is right (that BMW isin't going to pay for itself)

I did (actually I went straight out of school with no college) and without a shadow of a doubt it was the worst job I EVER had. And I have had some pretty impressively carp jobs, believe me.

Not having a degree doesn't mean your life is over, you'll be able to find entry level work relatively easily. The problem comes a few years down the line with promotion prospects etc. and most non-graduates will hit the glass ceiling at some point. It happened to me and I went to college (and am still there).

Often employers will pay for you to do some kind of training whilst you're working for them, insurance and finance type jobs spring immediately to mind. If you are just biding your time until you decide what path you want to take then banking is fine, but if you start at the bottom these days and stay there it can take a very long time to work your way up.

Yep, the bank of chocoblock of people with no ambition.

If I were a college drop out, starting at the bottom, I'd go work in accounts in a company (there are loads of accounts jobs.)

You'll learn some real skills - accountancy, HR, credit control, etc. - and your employer will happily pay for your accountancy exams.

I would really recommend avoiding the bank.

€11/hour isn't going to pay for a BMW either unless you live at home!

Having worked in a bank for a short time, I got the impression only a relatively small percentage had been to college and most of them seemed to see it as a waste of time, almost look down on those who had. Maybe it was just the division I was in. I didn't stay there very long.
