Please use the YouTube sticky in future.

I'll give this one a chance in case others want to share optical illusions...

    Thanks! Here we go...

Paper Dragon illusion (turn sound on for narrative): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIZcl8q0u4Q

    Spinning figure: http://www.procreo.jp/labo/labo13.html

The woman appears to be spinning clockwise, but if you concentrate hard enough you can make her appear to spin anti-clockwise. HINT: If you're having difficulty with this scroll the page down so you can only see her lower leg and reflection. If necessary focus only on her foot in the reflection. Once you have the foot spinning anti-clockwise scroll back up and watch the figure follow suit.

Watch this video and count the number of times someone in white passes the ball. Take a note of it and we'll see later whether you got it right.

    The McGurk Effect (needs sound):
    http://www.media.uio.no/personer/arntm/McGurk_english.html

Okay, remember that video from earlier. Watch again. This time don't count how many times the ball is passed, just take it in. Notice anything different?

That McGurk effect is amazing and a head wreck.

That pass the ball thing I've seen before and it never tricked me.... I'm not quite sure how you can miss it? I'd be interested to know if anyone was"fooled" by it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭BendiBus

I saw the ball passing thing before and was fooled by it then. I was fooled again just now :o

The McGurk effect is amazing - there's nothing I can do to control what I hear.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

I was fooled by the pass the ball thing.

I hear "GA" when looking at the McGurk thing and "BA" when not....

Why don't I hear "DA" like 98% of people when looking at it??

I don't understand the ball thing... Do people not see the gorilla when they're counting at first?

I can only get the bitch to spin anti-clockwise? Can't see the clockwise thing at all.

I wasn't fooled by the pass the ball thing, it would be fairly hard to miss that gorillia. I saw the spinning lady a while ago, and it's brilliant! Once I saw her change direction I couldn't make her go back to the way I saw her first.

i dont understand the ball thing at all... i counted 13 when i saw it the first time and still wasn't messed up by anything the second time does anyone care to explain?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,962 ✭✭✭GhostInTheRuins

I think if your concentrating on counting the ball passes you wont notice the gorillia walking into the shot.

It has nothing to do with the ball passing.

Amazing how the aul head works. It's so glaringly obvious I'm shocked ppl miss it.

Cool! The rainbow is in colour at first and then fades away to black and white.

Its hard to make the girl change direction, try lookng at her shadow. Takes a few goes.

Do not count the ball passes.

i noticed the gorilla and said to myself "o one of thems a gorrilla" and kept watching...

Getting the woman to spin the opposite direction is tough alright. I specifically included those instructions because those were the ones that worked best for me.

BrandonBlock and jacQues, I'm wondering if ye are left handed as I found some left handed people saw her spinning counter-clockwise first. Just a curiosity. Either way the same principle applies to try and get her spinning the other way.

JC 2K3, you're obviously just special! I haven't heard anyone say that before.

A lot of people have explained it already but for the basketball one the idea is that while you're busy counting the balls the first time you don't notice the gorilla walking by. Doesn't seem to work for everyone.

I actually kind of feel sorry for people who see the gorilla first time. It's amazing to watch it the second time and realise what you missed. I wonder is it a case of level of concentration i.e. people who miss the gorilla are totally focussed on the counting and those that don't are only half keeping an eye on it?

    No luck. :(

I have no clue what its supposed to do. I saw the gorilla first time when counting, if that's it.

Maybe it doesn't work for me because of my congenital prosopagnosia?

Guilty here; I'm left-handed. No luck though. I did once see a rotating head and there I could make it spin either way. But this lady is to asynchronous I'm guessing.

Right, that explains why it didn't work for me. With my visual agnosia I cannot recognise. E.G. if I leave my keys in the house somewhere I cannot simply glance through the room and find them that way. I must look at each and every possible location and evaluate those separately. So when watching that video I saw the gorilla simply because I'm trained to evaluate everything visual and don't take them for granted.

I didn't hear Da either, I heard Ga and when I closed my eyes, Ba...

That spinning lady is a good one alright, bit of a mindphuck.

I liked this one - but once I got her spinning the other way I couldnt change her back without refreshing the page. Maybe because I'm left-handed, but only partially!!

Maybe its my suspicious mind, but I kinda guessed there would be something in the background so I easily saw Gerald (from not the 9 o'clock news) walk into shot. He's looking well considering his age.

Dont have sound tonight so didnt check out the others.

Scientific research showed that children can’t recognise erotic scenes.
    Instead they see 9 dolphins.
On the other hand, adult’s mind is rather “corrupted” so adult person may have problems spoting 9 dolphins at first eye glaze.
If you have trouble spoting dolphins in the first 6 seconds, then your mind is heavily corrupted, and you are seriously obsessed with sex!
