Stream media across wifi network? Programs?

    Hey folks,

There's a program called Canola that works on Internet Tablets, and one of its functions is that it allows you to stream media from your PC, across your wireless network, to the internet tablet.

I can't seem to get it working on my internet tablet....

But it'd still be dead handy to be able to stream media from my PC downstairs to my laptop (Mac iBook) upstairs, across my wifi network.

Anybody know if this is possible? And what programs I would need to do it?

Thanks alot! I had a google search but without much luck.

From what I can make out Canola is just a front end for tablet devices, you still need a UPnP server running in the background which they link to a few on the bottom of their webpage.

    Twonky (multi-platform but commercial)
TVersity, Simplecenter, Orb - all free.
Nero Home - commercial but comes with PC UI for playback.

Once you have the UPnP server up and running with selected media shared through it's interface you then point the client device at the media server (the canola software should have a UI for this to connect to a DNLA/UPnP server) and your set.

As for cross platform playback UI's for Windows and OSX that I'm not sure on you could probably get one client for the PC and one for OSX

VLC also have some streaming capabilities but nothing with UI like a media centre I think.

Edit: The Wiki entry on UPnP has loads of links to various clients and servers go nuts!
