i was messing about last night trying to set up a home network between laptop and the PC via the microsoft network wizard . While i was doing this i must have changed some user settings for the file access.

On the Laptop , i originally had a shared folder which could be accessed by the both users of the laptop . Now after messing around with the network settings ,i cant access this folder called 'shared documents' ( it seems to have disappered ) and cant access the 'all documents' folder either , even though i have administration privilages on the laptop.

All my music was in this shared folder and now it seems to have disappeared.
Please help - all suggestions welcome!!

I am running windows XP and have already tried to run a system restore.

Do a search for any file you put in the shared docs whose name you can remember.
Also explore through the main (C?) drive for the shared docs.

I ran a search for all of music files in the C drive and none of the files that i had before have shown up.

Either the files are gone or i dont sufficient permission to access them.
Is there any way i can get them back?

usually if you dont have permission to access them you can still see them (just cant access them)

i presume the files were mp3
Goto to search in your start menu and select all files and folders, go into more advanced options and select search hidden files and folders, then do a serach for *.mp3

see what it comes up with

    c:\documents and settings\all users\Shared Documents

I ran the search as per above with the hidden documents box ticked and nothing showed up that would have been in the shared documents folder.
I cant open C:// .... All users or all documents.as it

The all documents folder is showing on the C drive with an icon showing a hand holding out a folder- what does this indicate?? When i click on this icon it says it is not accessible and access is denied.

I must have done something when i was trying to set up a network ??

I restored the computer to sometime in to a date back to July as this was my last restoration point. The only problem was that during the first week of August i loaded all my CDs music onto Windows Media Player.

So now since i have restored the computer back to the date in July does this mean that i cant search to find the music i would have loaded up onto the PC in August ?

In any case however the Shared documents folder existed before July so i could still search for things in it .

strange, something doesn't sound right there...

restore points shouldn't affect the documents folders, just system files, but i have seen it happen.

there's nothing in that folder above?

    try the following also:

Did you check the other PC that you were setting up the network with? As far as I know, that icon with the hand showing a folder suggests that that is a shared folder.

If you have the Windows Firewall enabled then you might have accidentally turned off File Sharing which may in turn have done something with your Shared folder.
