its .m4v for iPods and I usually just use Quicktime, the handiest, and no installation required. Actually having said that, not sure if the export to .m4v option is available in regular QT, I've only ever used Pro.

But not as handy for grabbing directly from DVD. Handbrake is, on the other hand.

peeps, is this normal? Its taking over 12 hours for handbrake to convert a bog standard dvd to ipod compatible mp4. Surely thats not right??

Sounds long. What machine do you have?
I threw a random DVD (2hr long) into my laptop (2.3GHz Intel MBP) and started Handbrake rip to iPod format and it's telling me it will take 1hr and 35 mins.
Maybe your DVD has deliberate bad sectors to prevent copying.

im using a 2ghz imac with intel core duo. the dvd is fairly recent bought so its only been out of the box once or twice.

how do i find out the estimated rip time on a dvd? maybe i shud have read the instructions first!!

i have a Macbook 2Ghz with 2GB ram. Converting a DVD to .mp4 at 1500Kbps and no frame resize. takes about half an hour for a 2 hour film.

i then use iSquint to convert it down to an iPod video size, that takes another 30 mins.

you could use handbrake to convert straight to the iPod video size, but i prefer having a full size file on my hard drive, and then the small one just for the iPod.
