Job for my mam

    Hi all,

My mam works for a medium-sized estate agents business in south Dublin. She is 56 and has been working in the business for 14 years (7 years in the current company), and has earned herself a stellar reputation both from past clients and peers in the business, and brought in a huge amount of business into her branch of the company. However, the aforementioned company she works for are tight like nothing on Earth (the staff are left to use antiquated computers using crap "alternative" software to MS Office etc, and they (the employees at her branch ) were told today the branch was to make a 10 grand saving, to be deducted from their collective salaries. Although legal, I feel this is grossly unfair, particularly the manner in which the MD of the company delegated the task of informing the staff to the branch administrator.

At this point I feel it's time she look elsewhere for a job (even in a different line of business), as the management of the company are apparently completely unscrupulous.
My mam has no qualifications as such, but she is very experienced in the housing market, she has good computer skills (MS office excel word etc although her typing is not great) and can perform bookkeeping. She has excellent communication and interpersonal skills and would be ideal in a position as an administrator.

Could anyone throw any suggestions at all towards me pertaining to what her options are. My mam feels the situation is completely hopeless and she must sustain the impact of this decision, I however contest this and I feel in today's Ireland there simply HAS to be a better alternative for her.

    Thanks in advance

    P

My mum was in a very similar position. She got in contact with fas about doing some courses and they put her in contact with various other people. She has had a stream of temporary jobs (often covering maternity leave) as admin in schools and in the HSE. I'm sorry I have no idea what she was paid but she was happy and although she is constantly being rung about other jobs she acutally quite likes taking a month or so off every 6 months which she can do because they are temporary jobs.
