Hi I'm taking a year out (hopefully only one) and am looking for a job to fill that year. However I'd like to get something that pays more than min wage, hopefully with a small bit of job satisfaction in it. What are my options at this stage? I have a BA in English and History, I type at 60 wpm and I may have a car soon if needs be. What sort of jobs are available? And is the jobs market slowing down? Any tips will be appreciated.

If only it was that easy

A lot of arts graduates work in call centres/banks etc for the short term straight after graduating. Nothing wrong with taking a job with no major responsibilities to pay the bills, just make sure you have some sort of medium term game plan (e.g. postgraduate/teaching/something completely different). If you end up in one of these places you'll probably meet individuals who were in the exact same situation as you 3 years ago but are still no closer to moving on.

I also know a few people who took a job with the intention of staying for about a year but then got promoted and gained some valuable experience. So don't go dismissing the idea of being an insurance salesman jut yet!

I suggest travelling as you won't get much of a chance when you join the rat race. go on a J1.

The J1 could be a good idea for next summer but in the mean time I'm looking for something else. The social welfare officer sent me up to the VEC to talk to a guy about adult learning work, thats what I'm aiming for at the minute.

You have a BA in English, if i were you i'd go teaching english abroad for the year. I'm actually heading myself in a couple of months.

I'm in the same boat and decided if i don't do it now i never will.

p.s > You don't NEED a BA in English but i'm sure it helps :P

Thats a good idea - if you head over to Korea or Japan (or pretty much anywhere in asia) you'll get accomodation paid for and enough of a salary to cover the cheap living expenses and then extra for savings etc.

Sounds good, but do you need a TEFL qualification? Who do I have to get in touch with about getting a job there?
