Very high idle

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Car always starts fine first time, idling smoothly @600rpm. When starting to drive the throttle seems to be "stuck" regularly @2200rpm typically in 2nd or 3rd gear. This can happen when driving along and doesn't even stop when coming to a stop while still in gear, say for a traffic light. This happens mainly when the engine is cold, but sometimes when the engine is fully warmed up

When this happens, if I "blip" the accelerator, the idle goes back down to normal speed straight away

The car is a '01 Rover 75 1.8 petrol. Anyone know what this might be?

Does your car have fly by wire throttle? I guess not.

weak throttle return spring, or dirt in the cable/lines? guessing though

Dirty or faulty throttle body, dodgy engine temp sender (I've seen these cause engines to surge while driving ).

Best to get the fault memory read to be sure.

This happened on my old Merc 190e it would stick at 1000-1050 in slow moving traffic when stopped. I fixed myself but as its 4 years ago I can't recall what I did. Prolly was a sticky throttle cable.
