Cool, love that game. Still have 1-(7?) lying around.

Ah Commander Keen, now they were great games. Keen 5 & 6 were probably my personal favorites.

I still have most of the Keen series on 3½ inch floppy disks somewhere around the house, haven't played them in years. I should dust them off and complete them again.

I never played the series despite hearing about it all the time. What was the draw to these games? From the outside they feel like normal platformers.

Wouldn't mind reading that article but don't have the time. Probably read most of it before as the story of Commander Keen is pretty much the story of iD.

The appeal? Yeah, it's kinda hard to say. When I first started playing the game we had I was like, "what the f*ck is this sh*t?". It didn't feel as good as the platformers I was playing on the NES at the time. But once I got into I found it very addictive. The level design is quite good (this is iD after all) and there was a lot to it.

It probably has nothing to offer you if you're visiting the first time. I doubt today that players would get much out of it other than a nostalgia trip.
