Just moved over to the UAE for a year, and was wondering is there a way around the censorship that is invoked here. Just want to access http sites that would aide me not losing track of western tv :)

Didn't realise they had censorship out of curiousity what do they censor you on? Is it similar to the great firewall of China?

When you access certain sites the screen you get tells you that this site does not comply with the moral standards of the UAE. Most of the torrent sites, and all the streaming tv sites, and of course porno ;)

Your in china. If you need pornography, hire one of those lovely looking hoores. News can be found amongst the sub cultures of china, who are obsessed with western culture. Don't be afraid to walk into a dodgy bar, you'll tower over them! It's likely that i could be completely wrong but that's the most handy solutions I can come up with while in work.

But trust me on the hoores ;)

Ah you know the UAE is in the middle east?

Just discovered that phone calling card websites are also blocked, as well as sites that question the US government.

It might be worth looking into the legality of accessing the sites that are blocked. It would be a nasty surprise to find out it was treated seriously.

There are some SSL-enabled proxy services out there, but most of them seem to be commercial. If you know anyone who can give you a free shell account with SSH access, that's probably the easiest/cheapest way to do it. Otherwise, you could look into Tor (I find it too slow to be of much use though).

Not a bad idea, you don't need your hands getting chopped off for looking at some pr0n!

Tor is poor! Used to be a Tor user, but it has peak times that are really bogged down by just too many users.

Have you tried connecting through a UAE university? Try American University in Dubai http://www.aud.edu or American University of Sharjah http://www.aus.edu
