Can anyone explain the difference in the 30 year precipitation figures for cork airport and Roches point on the met eireann website? ( averages and extremes) Annual rainfall 1194mm for cork airport and 935.7 for R. point! thats a difference of 20% or more! Does the harbour mouth account for this? The distance between the 2 weather stations is only 10 1/2 miles. Thanks.

Cork airport is elevated much above sea level(asl) and be one of the reasons it would experience higher rainfall totals than roches point.

Thanks! So the harbour mouth itself wouldn't have any effect?

No i wouldn imagine so.Even though the distances between the two are relatively close it would be considered very far away from each other when showers are falling too.One location could received showers while the other could miss totally increasing one of the locations(in this case Cork AP) rainfall. This would accumulate over the course of 12 months. That and higher elevation would be my best guestimate why the two differ.
