External Power for an IDE cd drive?

Hey. Just doing a bit of a project with an old PC with no room for and no power for a cd drive. However it does have an additional IDE connection for a cd drive.

my major problem is, how can I power the drive?
My main idea is to use the power from my external hdd case and then connect the ide into the pc. However, if this doesn't work im up a certain creek without a paddle.

    Any ideas ?

    Cheers

If you had the space and an IDE connector but no spare molex connector for power, you could use a splitter. I take it you want to use an internal drive as an external drive? You could always just buy a pretty-looking external drive although it usually costs a little extra. Some internal drives might work in a hard drive enclosure but I wouldn't chance it.

    Hey, cheers for the reply.

An external drive won't work, the pc has only 2 usb ports, but both are broken.

Out of cusiosity, what happened them? Are they physically broken? Perhaps it's only a driver issue. Seeing as you've mentioned it, do this for me: Start --> Run --> devmgmt.msc --> hit enter. Are there any yellow exclamation marks there by any chance?

You can always add more USB ports. If you have a spare PCI slot, you can easily add 2-4 more ports and use them instead.

unfortunately, there is only one PCI slot (this pc is more like an industrial pc) which is taken up using the IO card.

Also, there is no longer an operating system on the hdd, the reason im looking for a cd drive is to put eComStation back on.

I've gotten a few ideas from the guys i work with so ill try some and let you know.

    Cheers
