Band Aid - Songwriter looking to start band

I play guitar and write songs - some of them are pretty good I think / hope. So hoping to get a band together...

I like stuff like: Nick Drake, Velvet Underground, Beatles, Teenage Fanclub, early REM, Pavement, Broken Social Scene, The Sea and Cake, Apples in Stereo, electronic stuff (Ulrich Scnauss, Four Tet, New Order, kraftwerk), Beach Boys, Bowie, Neil Young, Paul Simon etc... a lot of brazilian stuff, funky breaks, stax, phil spector, afrobeat, 60s pop and 60s garage bands, psychedelic rock, new wave too - everything really...

Want to form a band that is really about good catchy songs, nice melodies and harmonies with bit of an edge / presence to them (i.e. not James Blunt / Paddy Casey)
Have some apple mac softwear which can be used for basic recording etc. I guess at the back of my head I'm thinking something sounding like Broken Social Scene / Arcade Fire (lots of instruments, good melodies, some organised chaos..) but with more variety/ fun in the songs (a la the Beatles) / maybe a little more upbeat (a la teenage fanclub) / more natural sounding (a la velvet underground)

Like the idea of a collective - would like to get regualar reherasal space somewhere once a week with a core group of 4 or 5 and then ask others (even if in other bands / into other styles) to come along and play when they please...

Anyone who could play a few instruments would be great and maybe someone who also likes writing music (i have a lot of lyrics) / other songwriters welcome too - it didn't hurt the beatles having a few song-writters - good songs is what it's all about. Also colloborating on writing songs would be good. Also like the idea of a female singer. Some one who could play strings or some brass would be cool too - anything a bit different. Open to ideas.....Also different nationalities, genders, backgrounds etc all v. welcome... in my utopian view it would be very inclusive, supportive, creative, good fun, etc. Age range mid-20"s - early 30"s (basically mature in outlook).


I'm not a muso and personally not really a fan of prog, metal or epic guitar solos and the like. My own guitar playing is standard indie-rock fare - so you don't have to be hendrix.... and I don't think that great musicianship is a pre-requisite for making good music - more passion for music, creativity, good fun, commitment etc. I want to be gigging by Christmas. I'm a guitarist - Would you consider something with a slightly harder edge? Something like Queen? They seemed to have it all! Great songs, catchy tunes...

I'm with you on epic solos - people who spend 10 mins burning up the fretboard bore me a little.

Hope all's well with everyone

Sorry if anyone hasn't heard back from me or anything - life is a bit manic at the moment.

Band-wise haven't got anything concrete sorted at all. In between work and family stuff am trying to do a few rough recordings at home - just something to be able to give to people so they can decide if they like them or not. Will then get in touch with people again...

Take it easy in the meantime
