Sweet!

Should be interesting to see how the "indirect" fighting with the pokemon works.
....and will other characters still be able to throw Pokéballs at these Pokemon?

I'm a happier camper now

i hope that it is not going to be Pokémon that you have to have on the DS

Well... no.
It's Squirtle, Ivysaur, Charizard. That's it. No "you must have a DS" tricks here; this isn't Stadium.

And yeah, I expect you can still throw Pokeballs at Pokemon (Pikachu, Pichu, Mewtwo & Jigglypuff had no problems doing it in Melee, after all)
