Why do we celebrate films and actors?

I love film, but I was watching a promo, reading all the blurb for the new Bourne movie and I just wondering: why do we celebrate this profession so much?

My doctor, my hairdresser and my dentist have had more impact upon my daily life than Matt Damon.

Is that we get to watch adults 'play' like we used to do when we kids?
I was watching my niece playing on the swings and I was thinking that I would love to do that! But, I guess I watch Jason do it for me for a few hours and then I am happy enough?

I don't know, really. Are actors really that good to be celebrated so much in our culture?

I still love film; for example, I think you can 'love' woody allen without making him into some kind of god.

I think it's more the fickle fascination with celebrity than anything else. We're talking about a culture that senselessly exhalts talentless nobodies like Paris Hilton and whatever Big Brother "star" is in at the moment, is it that much of a stretch that similar people are in knots over the likes of Tom Cruise?

I do agree entirely on that point.
